SEYMOUR, Ind. -- A 22-year-old man fatally shot himself after a brief confrontation with officers outside his home, police said.

Officers called about a man threatening suicide Monday night arrived to find Roger Edwards armed with a shotgun at a mobile home park in Seymour, about 40 miles southeast of Bloomington.

"He was not threatening the officers, he was just refusing, yelling obscenities, and had refused to drop the gun after repeated demands to do so," Police Chief Craig Hayes said.

After a brief standoff with police, Edwards shot himself in the abdomen, Hayes said.

Edwards was flown to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Shortly before the shooting, Edwards got into an argument with family members who were in the home, Hayes said. Drugs may have played a role in the situation, Hayes said.
