A man armed with a rifle surrendered to authorities after a two-hour standoff Monday in Fort Smith, police said.

Fort Smith police Sgt. Jarrard Copeland said officers were dispatched to a residence in the 6700 block of Bolton Circle shortly before 11 a.m. Monday, in response to a report of a domestic disturbance. When officers arrived at the scene, they were contacted by Ricky Dewayne Fry Sr., 51, who told them his son, Ricky Dewayne Fry Jr., 22, had a gun and was threatening to kill himself.

Ricky Fry Sr. told police his son had become angry and threatened him with a knife, and later had taken a .22-caliber rifle into a bathroom and locked the door, Copeland said.

Police spoke to Ricky Fry Jr., who told them he just wanted to kill himself, according to a police report. Copeland said the Police Department’s hostage negotiators, Cpl. Truman Phillips and Chaplain Ben Stephens, arrived at the residence a short time later and began negotiating with Fry.

During the standoff, police transported Fry’s ex-girlfriend to the scene so she also could speak to Fry, the report states.

Copeland said the incident ended peacefully about 1 p.m. when Fry agreed to give himself up. Police arrested Fry on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.

The rifle was not loaded, Copeland said.
