Suspect Apparently Came Out Door, Fired Shot

OLATHE, Kan. -- A five-hour standoff ended early Tuesday morning when police shot and killed a man at a home in this Kansas City suburb.

Police Sgt. Greg O'Halloran said that Bryan E. Jones, 36, was shot when he threatened police with a weapon. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

O'Halloran gave this account of the standoff and shooting:

Officers were called to the home shortly before 10 p.m. Monday and found Jones barricaded inside the home. A police tactical response team and negotiators were called in.

About 3 a.m., Jones went out his back door and fired a round into the air. He did the same thing about eight minutes later.

Around 3:50 a.m., Jones came out his front door and was shot when he threatened officers.

"It's a myriad of emotions that impact. Obviously, we go to great lengths to preserve life, and truly regret any loss of life in a situation like this," O'Halloran said.

KMBC's Donna Pitman reported that officers were called to the home by a friend of Jones' who told police his friend was suicidal.

Interesting way to handle a suicide call...send out swat. It's almost like they wanted to help the guy commit suicide by cop.

I mean...I wasn't there, and the news often plays up the sad side of the story...but. If they were called for a suicide issue...why didn't they tear gas the house...or wait him out?

Guess it was just easier to shoot the guy.

(Disclaimer for yeah, I know he 'threatened them'.)

"Officers were called to the home shortly before 10 p.m."

"Around 3:50 a.m., Jones came out his front door and was shot when he threatened officers."

Sounds like a good amount of "waiting him out" until he forced the issue.

True...i haven't seen this on the local news yet, so I'm not sure what exactly transpired. Alot of times, around here simply walking out into your front yard with a firearm = threatening. That's why I'm concerned. If he came running out blasting away...okay. But....There have been several fatal shootings by police in KC the past couple of months...and in some of them the police look a bit....aggressive.

But, I'm not in their shoes...
