Man Shoots Self In Head Accidently

People make the amazing assumption that a firearm is not loaded when they should make the failsafe assumption that they are always loaded.

These are always so sad....a death that was absolutely preventable but that carelessness allowed to happen.

A lot of those things are suicides that the family wants covered up.

I agree people do make unsafe assumptions about their firearms on occasion. Even then, how can you shoot yourself in the head with a pistol while loading it? That's got to be almost anatomically impossible unless it's a muzzleloader. If it was a revolver he'd have had to be holding the gun pointed at him at a downward angle while inserting the cartridges so they didn't fall out. If it was a semi auto he would have had to have racked the slide backwards while holding the trigger with his thumb or something. I'm leaning toward the idea of one of the comments on the news article, suicide.

Even if it was a BP pistol, why would he be loading and capping it at home, in his bedroom? That's a pretty odd home defense weapon, though I suppose it's possible.

Suicide or murder. I think some suicides try to stage it so it looks like an accident so the families can collect the insurance and not have to live with the stigma. How many times have we heard "he died while cleaning his gun and it accidentally fired"? Pretty hard to fire a gun with a cleaning rod in it.

Ironically, as a gun guy, I've often imagined that in the event I managed to make some ridiculous combination of safety mistakes so bad that I did accidentally shoot myself, being so embarrassed that with my dying gasp I'd whisper to the onlookers, "tell my wife it was suicide!"

:D

Especially if your a moderator or a senior member. It would have to be a an accident. You guys would have to swear that the member was sane and a happy . Plus I don't think St. peter would let you carry, if you did youself in. Who wants to walk around heaven forever without their dream pistol. I think they give you whatever you want "models we havent even seen yet" , "kind of like the "virgins". The catalog is unreal.

When I was moving after an incredibly long drive, solo, and with little sleep, I was unpacking some of my firearms and had my Beretta 70, for some reason I had it loaded in the box. Anyway, while getting it ready for bedside defense, I wanted to leave it unchambered, hammer down. I was about to lower the hammer revolver style, but remembered it is a little tough to control. Glad I removed the magazine and pulled the slide back, otherwise I would have had a NG (negligent discharge) the first day in my new apartment. That would look terrible on me.

Any time I plan on dry firing or cleaning my guns I always check the chamber 2-3 times. My grandpa once shot his TV out on the farm before doing some cleaning and he has been around firearms all his life. Actually, I am pretty sure it wasn't the first time he shot his TV. Moral of the story: Check, check, check and check again for everyone's safety.

Suicide...

Or, Murder.

3rd and most remote possibility - 'Accidental Discharge' ( which would tend to be to the face or under-chin or neck area) Then again, maybe he dropped the Gun, and, it was of a design which went off.

But...article said 'Head' rather than 'face'...

Sometimes these little cues are meaningful.

I treat all my guns as if they are loaded, they are always loaded. No, they are really always loaded....bang....told you.

That's still an awkward thing to pull off. He would have to have gotten his thumb in the trigger guard and squeezed... But this was while loading.

Another question: why was it unloaded in the first place?

I agree with the fateful sages of THR, that he offed himself.

Come on guys, we have a 3-paragraph newspaper article in front of us. We don't have any real facts.

In the report of my suicide people will be scratching their heads wondering how I managed to shoot myself in the back of the head three times with a bolt action .22lr while watching TV with a cold one on the coffee table and no coaster.... :)
