Greenfield - A man who tried to rob a Greenfield gun shop at knifepoint Thursday afternoon was shot in the chest by the shop owner, police said.

The victim, identified only as a 57-year-old Greenfield man, was taken to Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to police.

Police have yet to interview the victim because the shooting left him unconscious, Detective Sgt. Paul Schlecht said.

Schlecht said later Thursday that the man's wound was not life threatening. The man's condition was not available Thursday evening from Froedtert.

Schlecht said the shooting took place at about 3 p.m. inside Buckhorn Guns, one of four businesses located in a plaza in the 2700 block of W. Ramsey Ave.

The parking lot of the plaza was surrounded by yellow police tape Thursday afternoon as police investigated the shooting.

Schlecht said he did not know what the suspect demanded but said there is nothing to indicate the account of the incident that the store owner gave police was not true.

He said the store owner, 44, shot the man once in the chest and that apparently no one else was inside the store when the shooting took place. The store owner was not injured.

Schlecht said the case is being referred to the Milwaukee County district attorney's office, which will review the actions of the suspect and the shop owner. A case review could happen today, he said.

Er, excuse me, but isn't the victim the store owner and the perpetrator, or suspect the unconcious man in the hospital?:banghead:

And to think it only took a reporter and an assistant to get this short little story so wrong until the final paragraph, by which time the casual reader has only read that the suspect was the victim of one of those "bad" gun owners.:fire:

I have to question the motive of someone doing something like this. They have to want to be caught or killed; they can't be serious about it. I used to frequent a gun shop that was "robbed" several times with half hearted attempts like this. The store employed like 3-5 people behind the counter, all armed, along with a Rottweiler behind the counter. Each time the robber immediately gave up when everyone pulled their guns. I work with the public and even after working in this profession for almost 20 years I am still quite often amazed at the stupidity of some people. But all that aside, I still can't believe someone like this guy was making a serious robbery attempt.

Boats nailed it.

But it's not surprising that such is the quality of the reporting considering the reporter's name and a likely cultural bias he grew up with. Even so, where were the copy editors...?

Rob a gun store using a knife ? ? ? ?

About equal with the guy trying to rob the bank several years back. Seems he wrote the robbery note on one of his personalized checking account deposit slips..........

:what:

I'm sure there are some very intelligent street criminals out there but why is it we only hear about the most idiotic ones?

Gunshop owner was telling me the other day about the three times they've been robbed. Twice by the same man! Discounting that hapless bastard, the other time was almost humorous. Among other things, they used a wood case to smash in a larger glass case to get several cheap knives. The wood case had knives ranging in price from $200-$600! They walked all over the glass cases leaving perfect foot prints. They didn't even tough the double rifle case, probably because no prices were listed.

The guy that robbed the place twice had a good idea on how to get in (which I won't reveal), just wasn't too selective of the goods. There was a O/U shotgun being cleaned and he took just the receiver and barrel. He took a few knives and some pins. And I think two pair of gloves. Then he went back to get the rest of the parts for the shotgun. Went home and got a plastic bag to hold them in. And once was before midnight and once was after midnight so he was charged with two counts of everything.

Dumb crimimals... you gotta love 'em.
