This mature doe was shot at a distance of approx 150 yards with my older Savage .308 rifle. One bullet through the chest organs did the job nicely for me. This is my first hunt with Remington's reduced recoil ammo and I'm impressed. Typically, I hunt with my 30-30 carbine but had a hankering to take out my "big rifle" for a hunt.

What are the differences between your usual .30-30 load and Remington's reduced recoil .308... bullet weight and velocity? And I'm guessing it's a RN/FN vs a SP. They'll both obviously get the job done.

This ammo features a 125 grain semi-pointed bullet at approx 2,600 fps. This nearly replicates 300 Savage figures. The bullet punched all the way through the animal and left an impressive exit hole.

There isn't a deer on this planet that will go very far from a 125 SP at 2600fps. Nice deer and if the ammo shoots well in your rifle then load them up and go hunting.

Okay, so compared to the average .30-30, we're talking 25grs lighter bullet running about 200fps faster. Performance sounds good. Will have to remember.

I hope you got plenty of real good meat off that deer.

Some years back I got hold of a Spanish Mauser in 7.62 CETME, which is a 7.62 NATO (.308 Remington) but downloaded a bit, and you're not supposed to "stress" the action with hot, hunting, .308 loads. It was supposed to have been the upgraded version to full 7.62 NATO but when I checked, mine hadn't been upgraded and was the old 1950's version of the Spanish rifle. (The original CETME cartridge used a 120 grain bullet at about 2600 fps (iirc). )

A buddy of mine wanted a rugged rifle in .308 for his kid, and since he was an avid reloader, he didn't balk at the idea of loading a reduced .308 load. Well he really dropped the load down, using at a 150 grain soft-point bullet at about 2200 fps. Well the farthest they shoot is a mere 200 yards, so that seems to work well. His son loves the rifle, especially with an after-market Timiney sporting trigger replacing the clunky two-stage Mauser, military trigger. He's harvested several deer, AND apparently Hornady now has a "reduced velocity" bullet for hunting with reduced .30 caliber loads, which does even better than standard soft-points.

So Remington has jumped on the band wagon and is making factory loads for the same idea, which is great, and it doesn't surprize me that you did well with that load.

Tell your friend to look at the 135 FTX for his son's .308. Hornady told me they have a 2500-1500 expansion window. I shoot them at 2280fps and they expand well dump a lot of energy and dropped the 2 deer I shot with them just as fast as anything else.

IMO the 150's he's shooting are at or below the minimum fps for reliable expansion at 200 yards. Something for him to think about.
