Hello ! I bought a Marlin Xt22 MTW 22 WMR, the version with walnut stock, tub fed and it looks great ! The blueing is very nice as well as the wood.

When I got i last fall I checked it real quick and cleaned it but never fired it.

Now Im ready to get it out in thefield but noticed 2 issues, the bolt is tough to close and the bolt does not seem to close completely.

1 - Bolt face does not seem to totally close on the breach as per picture below:

2 - If you check the cut out where the bolt should sit there is a big chunk of metal, isnt it a sloppy job ?

Im not sure if I should fire it especially with the bolt face that away from breach :(

What do you think ? I think Ill call Marlin to send it back for repair..

I'd E Mail them with those pictures and ask if that cut should have gone all the way down without leaving the "step"

If they say yes, then you could fix it yourself with a file or a Dremel tool and save the time and expense of shipping it back

here are two pictures of my 882 marlin .22 mag. it has the same ledge as yours, but yours looks like it is higher and may need taken down a little at a time untill the bolt closes tight on the .22 mag casing. hope the picture helps. eastbank.

sorry i hit the post it. any way here are the pictures. eastbank

That almost looks like they leave that there for head spacing purposes. I can't think of any other reason to have it there.
Is it harder to close the bolt with a round in the chamber compared to without.

As I recall my Marlin bolt action from the 1970s, the bolt head is not square, it has rounded edges, so I am not seeing anything unusual in the first photo in post 1.

It is not unusual to see "gaps" in actions intended to accommodate fouling or debris without jamming. Rounded edge of the bolt face and space in the receiver under the bolt locking lug do not necessarily alarm me if there is no back-and-forth play of the bolt itself.

The front gap is normal. I have it on my 1980's 25MN. The metal protrusion in the bolt handle area however is not. Mine does not have it, its nice and smooth/flush/clean. I'd contact Marlin, they'll make it right.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will def call Marlin tomorrow morning, until they fix it Ill play with my Ruger RAR 22lr :)

I would not send it back. Easy fix.

File, cold blue and shoot.

Mine didn't have the ledge, was nice 90 degree corner of major vert/horiz slot flats.

I did mod mine though. Running scope at normal ring height............bolt removal would clunk the bolt handle on the rear eyebell (even after adding flat to bolt bend-older model). The rear of the receiver bolt slot does nothing.....so I beveled mine just enough. That way as the bolt was pulled out (for cleaning) I could keep downward pressure on it and have it "drop" right before it was free, missing the scope.

Think I took a little off the bolt "lug" corner to help drop it as well.

Easy little mod :)

Yes, I would definitely contact Marlin. The step under the bolt shouldn't be that
high. Another thing that may be causing problems is the rear screw securing the
action to the stock. If the bedding is a bit sloppy in that area, tightening the screw a bit too tight can flex the action putting the bolt in a bind. It's easy to tighten it too much. OYE

While I'm thinking about it, Marlin doesn't seem to keep spare parts in stock for very many years these days.
Those are pretty reliable models. It's always nice to have an extra striker spring or a magazine spring, or an extractor on hand just in case. Some parts they will not sell you. Some of those can be obtained through Brownells. OYE

Well I called Marlin today and send them pictures, they sent me a RA number very quickly and so I sent it back for repairs.

Will let you know how the situation ends :)

Thanks for the support !
