marinecoat with wooden furniture?

I'm hopefully picking up a mossy 500 with the marinecoat finish in the next few days. It only has a pistol grip and no stock and due to the excessive discussion on this board and common sense/i like rifles, I need a stock.

I had the thought of maybe getting a wooden stock for it? I'm not against synthetic, but does anyone have a stainless/marine shotgun (870s are ok too) with wooden furniture and could put up a pic so i can see what it looks like? A google image search hasn't yielded much.

I do not see why that would not look good at all and if that is what you want to do then go for it. To me the whole point to the marine coat/ synthetic is to cut down on corrosion and warping wood in wet areas. But if you want a wood stock then there is no better reason than you want it. Depending on where you live the marine coat may just be an added expense. My 590 is synthetic/ parkerized, but here in Colorado humidity is a non issue.

I live in the appalachian rainforest, and I've actually seen my bro's yugo SKS get rusty on our backpacking trips. Not much, mind you, but sometimes you have to hike out through a cloud...super humid.

Interesting. The Mariner I purchased from another memeber (about 1-2yrs ago) had the laminated wood furniture on it. It looked pretty good, but I decided to swap it out with the synthetic stuff. If you go wood, use the high gloss/lamited type and it will protect the wood.

I used to live on the Gulf Coast of Texas so I know how living under water with humidity that is always north of 90% can be. So I say go for it. Might see if you can find a laminate stock rather than regular wood.

Thanks guys that helps. I'll prob pick up a wooden one to start...I just like some wood on my guns. I'll prob pick a synthetic sometime in the future.

IT's probably the coolest looking thing possible when it comes to shotguns. However, I feel like it may somewhat defeat the purpose of an all weather shotgun. Wood isn't going to immediately deteriorate due to the elements, but for a gun in heavily abusive elements 24/7, I'd much prefer the synthetic.

I agree about the wood not holding up in harsh climates. That's why I applied three coats of Spar Urethane to the stock and forend (Per Lee Lapin's suggestion) since this picture was taken.

Since when does wood not last in harsh(?) climates?

If you take care of the wood, give it what it needs, it'll last longer than you or your grandkids will.


Personally, I think a silvery pump gun with dark walnut furniture is the most handsome a pump gun can be.

The Sheriff's Office I work for has an Honor Guard for funerals, parades, demonstrations, etc. Anyway the honor guard members have hard chrome finished 870's with nice highly polished walnut furniture. Coupled with the dress uni's, the mounty style hats, the patent leather duty gear and chest straps and the white gloves they look really sharp.
