Marlin 1895 Cowboy 45-70 26" barrel

I just purchased a 45-70 9 shot lever action. I've been looking at the Henry 44 Mag lever for quite some time. I got a sweeeet deal on this Marlin, and I think I've satisified my want of a big bore long gun. Anyone had thoughts or opinions on the 45-70? Would love to hear good and bad comments.

I find the 45/70 to be an easy round to load and use. Plenty of bullets for loading and most of the guns that shoot this caliber have historical interest increasing the fun factor.

I have two 45/70s, a converted Martini and a Trapdoor Springfiend carbine. I have been looking at that Marlin (octagon barrel?) and I think it's a great looking rifle. My main problem is that the lever guns often have sharply curved butt plates and with my rather meaty torso and shoulder I get stabbed by the pointy base.

Yes, it has an octagonal barrel. It's a sweet feeling gun. I'll be shooting it this weekend at my farm near Wichita Falls, Texas. As I said, I got a sweet deal on this. An older gentleman bought the gun a few years back, fired about 30 rounds, and decided it was too big for him. A friend of his bought it from him. Not sure how much, then this guy, (who knows my brother), decided to sell it. The package included: the gun, with sling, 4X Leupold scope, hard gun case, original box, and 40 rounds. Not sure what the loads are yet. $375.00 !!!!!!! I jumped on that like a bird on a june bug. I could not believe my eyes!! Of course first thought, was how hot this thing was, but these guys are honest, so I know it's a legit deal. I'm just plumb tickled pink and can't wait to feel that power.

I have the same rifle a few years ago and love it. I have not fired many rounds due to cost and other rifle priorities. If I start reloading, it will be for that rifle. I paid a little bit more for it new though I still think I came out alright.

I shoot a Marlin 1895GS. Great rifle. My wife shoots it also. It's her favorite!
