Is XS sight systems the only game in town for the extended picatiny rail? I have always had my marlin scoped, and this year I am going full brush gun with it. Rear peep, firesight up front, and red dot mounted in a scout position. I have the 18" version, thinking about shorting up to 16", anyone have any experience with going this way, would love to see some pictures. I am also thinking about going the full wild west accessories, new lever, extractor and alum mag follower. I don't think there are any after market stocks available for the 30as, so any cool refinish ideas would be appreciated. Toying with the idea of a full on camo paint job, but I am always a bit scared to paint metal. Stocks can be easily refinished, but painted guns I always feel might de-value the gun, even though I don't think I will ever sell this gun (Christmas present first deer rifle)

Hey guys, also thinking about putting an A2 style but plate on the stock, hollowing out the stock for a cleaning kit. Anyone know where to find just the A2 but plate and rear sling part?

I'd stick with the 18 inches. I've looked at shortening a time or two and it's not cheap. To get your over all length down, a Youth stock is much more useful and cheaper. I am under the impression that a 336 stock will fit a 30 - could be wrong though. :uhoh:

If you want to do the WWG stuff, my priority would be to get the stuff that makes the trigger lighter/crisper. A good trigger makes a great rifle.

Painting metal is no big deal. Degrease, spry, cure and enjoy. I use Krylon Camo paint myself. If you want to remove it, acetone or fingernail polish remover will take paint off metal with a little elbow grease and plenty of ventilation.

I used to have a smith who would re-crown the barrel for about $20. It would be up to me to cut down/fit everything else. The biggest issue is having a new sight dovetailed or tapped in, but he was always pretty reasonable to just re-crown. That would probably be the last thing I do. To be honest I hadn't given much thought to the trigger, I will look into that.
