I recently got a Marlin 30AS(older version of the 336). I got a
leupold qd base and rings so that I could use a scope for longer range deer hunting, but also detach the scope when hunting in thicker cover or shooting shorter distances and use the iron sights. Would also come in handy if the scope was bumped. Well, when the qd base is installed its too tall and covers up the rear sight window, so that kind of defeats the purpose.

Any ideas of what I can do for a rear sight?

Tang sight, maybe?

I'm just guessing; usually people use those see-through scope mounts (which I think look strange) if they want a scope and iron sights.

yeah, and perhaps that what i could have done. I just wanted to be able to use the open sights sometimes and still have a scope. maybe i'll go talk to a gunsmith and see if there is some kind of way to mount a peep or a ghost ring somewhere on the leupold base where it won't interfere with the scope. i don't know how or if that would even work.

It would be cool if they could fashion some kind of peep out of a leupold qd ring

If you raise the rear sight remember to check the front sight height also.

A Receiver sight sound like a great idea. A tang sight could quite possibly be knocked back while stalking thru any heavy stuff.

The solution for me was to use an XS scout scope mount with Leupold 2.5x scout scope and QD rings, coupled with XS front/rear irons. With this setup, I can pull off the scope and still use the irons without interference.

Not a cheap solution if you already have an investment in the conventional setup, but well worth trying if you can reuse the receiver-mounted scope elsewhere.
