I was recently given a marlin 336, SN# 2300xxxxx. That would put it at 1977 built. Anyway, it's all gummed up with dried lubricant and 30 years of neglect. Not rusty, just all gummed up.

I see reference to 336A, 336C, and other such model numbers. This one just simply reads "Mod.336".

2 questions:

If I need to swap parts, do I need to research more re: Model designation (A, C, etc.)?

The scope mounts were drilled/tapped entirely through the receiver, is this normal? With the scope rings removed, I can SEE the bolt cycle through the screw holes. Doesn't seem kosher to me. Should I find some plugs? I do not plan on using a scope at this time, but want to keep the option open.

Thanks all!

You'll find most of the differences in model designations are sights and stocks and maybe barrel length. Basic design has not changed a whole lot, minor stuff.
You can just put screw plugs in the d&t holes and yes, it's normal.
They're great guns, and with a little clean up it will be fine.

The scope base holes are normal.

The 336C is a 20" carbine with walnut stock. Later models with a safety are 336CS. Originally a 336A had a longer 24" rifle barrel, but in the newest catalog a 336A has a 20" barrel with a hardwood stock as does the 336W. The only difference I can tell between the A and W models is that the W has 2 barrel bands and the A has 1 barrel band and a magazine end cap. Over the years there have been many versions but other than straight or pistol grips most of the internal parts are the same as NCsmitty stated.

You should install filler screws to keep moisture out of the action. But buy 'em from your local smith since hardware stores do not have the RIGHT ones.
