Marlin 336a

I am looking at a Marlin 336a (30-30) at Dick's which seems to be going for a great price. My only reservation is the wood ("walnut finish") on the gun looks like plastic. Otherwise it is seems mechanically like the sexier models.
Any thoughts?

It's probably stained birch, but it's still the same Marlin 336. If you want the pretty walnut, you'll have to pay more.

That model is my 30 30. Got the same thing at a sporting goods store that you are looking at. I have wound up putting a peep sight on it. It is a great shooter (cans at 100, a bit under 2 inch groups with factory rounds are pretty common, lots more consistent with handloading) and it is very handy.I have not had any problems with the wood or anything like that.

FANTASTIC barrel life and cheap to load for and shoots great. I vote get it!

I have that exact same model, and I bought it a year ago in December from Dick's, so its probably the same deal that you are looking at, or relatively close. I love the gun. First of all, you can't go wrong with a Marlin lever action. I actually was out shooting it today. I got great groupings at 100 yds. and put a couple right through the bulls-eye. The salesman told me when I bought it that they aren't known for their accuracy, but I have learned through shooting mine that he was wrong. It is great with the factory loads that I use. My only suggestion is that if you do decide to buy it, it wouldn't be a bad idea to look at upgrading the scope. The scope that comes with the package deal isn't the best, but it works okay for 100 yds. And your concern with the wood, well mine hasn't had any problems at all! The rifle is great and my friends love it as well. You will enjoy this a great deal if you buy it. You can't go wrong with it. I vote you get it as well, it will be money well spent! You now have 2 yes votes, so go get it!!

I too had a Dick's 336A and I traded it for an older pre-safety 336C with walnut furniture. I ended up with a better gun, I believe. If you are set on that model, the 336 is often found in the 336C configuration in used gun stores and pawn shops for 299-399, which is about what Dicks wants for a new 336A.

I gotta agree with most of the above posters. A Marlin 336 in a 30-30 is a rifle I think everyone should own . I lik'em just that much. Good solid (fairly cheap) multi-use round with better than average accuracy with most factory loads.

If you look around you should be able to pick up a nice example of one in a local pawn shop. That being said if the type of wood is not that big of an issue I'm sure the ones at Dick's are sound serviceable rifles.

I saw one at Dicks a few days ago for $350. I am not sure if it was walnut or birch - I did not look at it closely enough...it was behind the counter. However, it did not have the barrel band around the forearm - and I personally prefer that look.
