Marlin 39A Sight/Scope Question

I just picked up this older Marlin 39A with an old Weaver style scope on it. I would like to be able to still use this scope once in a while but I would like to be able to put a better scope on this gun.

As you can see by the photo when the Weaver scope was installed it was screwed into the barrel. The receiver has the screw holes to install a base for a scope so I'm not sure why it was installed this way.

My question is if I take this scope off what can I do about the holes in the barrel and what kind of base should I use for a better scope?

These were drilled and tapped for "tip-off" base. The rings are the claw kind that just clamp to a 3/8 dovetail solid base. Some ring mfg make sets that are see thru and clamp to the base. Your local gun store or smith will have info . Check IronSighter and Kwiksite brand or use regular tip off rings that you can't see thru but you may have to remove the rear sight if the obj lens on your scope is very big..

Here is a pic of mine with the fac base on it. You can get plug scws for the holes and there is a more permanent way to fill them without welding but you have to reblue the gun. Those look to be 8-40 holes in your bbl.

My 39A had the same mount with a steel Weaver 4X scope, but the scope is shorter than that one.

Using the factory drilled and tapped holes on the receiver I mounted a Weaver base that accepts any "Weaver type" mounts. It works great. I had the filler screws for the holes that the steel mount was secured with, so I put them in the holes. It won't hurt anything not to have them, but I would lube them well to prevent rust.

I totally understand why you want to lose that scope but I had to throw a plug in for those... I have had that scope or one very similar on a couple rifles of mine and they are extremely accurate when zeroed. I am talking about never miss accurate.
