Marlin 55 scope base

I would like to scope a marlin 55, bolt action 12 gauge shotgun, to be used as a slug gun. Google shows Weaver sidemount base 10M as the only option. I assume this needs a drill and tap. Does it use regular weaver rings? Will the scope be offset from the center? Does anyone have any other ideas? Thanks
