Just got one. Always wanted one. Can't find the serial number. Did they even have them?

Marlin 57 (not M), 22 Magnum.

I don't really want to remove the stock until I'm ready to tune the rascal up some.

Todd.

Prior to the 1968 Gun Control Act, serial numbers were not required by law on .22's and shotguns.

Some companies did it anyway on the more expensive models.

Marlin always did it on the Model 39 lever-action, but probably didn't on the less expensive models.

Thanks RC

Keeps me from messing with the stock till I'm ready.
Surprised that Marlin chose not to number it. Great action and well built gun.

Todd.

I guess there was even a mix up on the Marlin model 57 and 62 levermatic rifles where they "forgot" to serialize these through '69 production- even some of the .30 carbine levermatics managed to make it out the door w/o numbers! to this day if you send one to marlin they will apply a new serial number to the gun and give you a certificate explaining the issue.

That's some pretty cool customer service.

I guess though, not having a serial number - regardless of manufacturing date - implies a pre-GCA situation. Especially the 57... only 1 of several years requiring a number.

"Oh those.... those were manufactured last year..."
