I ran into a Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 pre-'68 that has the left side of the receiver D&T'd. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? I am curious if the aluminum receiver can handle this and it it is safe. It seems that it would be a good idea if you could install a Lyman sight since the options for aperture sights for the 60 are very limited. Overall the rifle is in good shape with no modifications.

If the holes aren't huge, sloppy or on a crack line it should be ok, I would for looks, plug the holes, just make sure the plug screws don't extend into the reciever and cause a problem, in so far as limited avaliability apeture sights goes,http://www.Tech-Sights.com is the hands down choice for usable sight set ups for .22 rifles they look like AR15 sights and adjust like them too, I use them on all of my training rifles.

The holes have screws in them and do not touch the bolt. I currently have a Marlin 70 with Tech-Sights and they are fantastic, but a little awkward to adjust. If this is an acceptable way to mount a sight I am wondering why it is not more common. I am more curious than anything. I am considering picking this up for a project and if I could mount a different aperture sight it would be a bonus.

Most folks these days just put optics on the rifles, because the factory sights suck so bad, and don't know any better that other options exist, it may be possible to find a lyman 57, or is it the 66, that will fit the hole pattern or perhaps a Williams side reciever mount, if not, Williams retails a rear dove tail mount sight that is pretty dang good and can be accsorised with target knobs and apetures, I'm glad your thinking about "iron sights" for that Marlin, most folks don't know what a 'good' set of sights will do for a rifle.

I do prefer aperture sights. I have a 60 with a 4x scope and don't seem to shoot it as much as the 70 with peeps. If you are talking about the Williams WGR reciever sight, I called Williams and they do not recommend it for a 60 or I would already have one. Plus the Lyman 57 or 66 just looks cool.
