Marlin 795 Vs. Ruger 10/22

My local gun store has a pretty good deal on the Marlin 795 .22lr. I like the gun toyed with it for a while and seems to be quality piece. But it seems to me that for a few dollars more I can end up with a 10/22 which is much more customizable including those fun 30rnd mags and such.

I was told that Marlins "micro groove rifling" is far superior to traditional rifling but dont know anything about it.

So, which is a better rifle for plinking and punching nice tight groups in paper. Also can I find after market mags for this rifle?

10/22 hands down. it's worth the extra money.

they shoot good stock, but don't take a lot of money to drive tacks. totally customizable, easy to disassemble, find parts everywhere...ect

If you want a plain .22 rimfire rifle and don't expect the world, either will do but the Marlin is typically less expensive.

If you want more than 10 rounds in a magazine, get the Ruger. Although 15-round magazines were available from Marlin, I'm pretty sure they haven't been made for awhile and I don't know if they'll fit the 795.

If you want to tweak the crap out of the gun/moneypit, get the Ruger.

If you just want to shoot the dang thing, and want something capable of printing nifty little groups provided you don't mind sticking to a few types of ammo, get the Marlin.

I have the Marlin. I've been able to regularly produce dime-sized 10 shot groups with it at 25 yards. I typically don't shoot .22LR past 50 yards. Works great for me.

I'd personally rather shoot the thing than pimp it.

the 795 is so much better than the 10.22, and I have a 10.22, that it is not even close. If you have a Gander mtn near you, they may have one, and right now you can get a 30 dollar discount. No, there are absolutely no aftermarket parts, but when you get maybe the number 1 or 2 top ever made cheapy, fun, field rifle 22 ever made, you really dont need a bunch of upgrades now, do you?
and by near perfect I mean, super accurate head shooting machine, that is super reliable, mags are available everywhere, it is tough, it is synthetic, it's slim fore end is made for off hand shooting, and it is cheap. This and It's clone, the Savage 64, would be it's closest rival. But I believe the Marlin is more accurate.

well I do wish there were hi-caps for the 795, that would make a big difference to me but it sounds like the 795 is a more accurate shooter.

The magazines for the 70PSS (same as 70P but stainless steel) will fit my 795. I have no idea how well that thing will work, but it's more than 10 rounds and one of the very few options you have.

I've seen straight, metal, 15 round versions occasionally at gun shows or on clearance racks, but they were never produced in great numbers in the first place.

As far as accuracy, mine really likes Federal's #710 40gr standard velocity load. It only does OK with Velocitors, which is what I wanted to hunt squirrels with. I believe I've read many different .22s prefer certain loads, and the 795 or 10/22 are no exception to that.
