MARLIN 795 .22LR

I was looking for an affordable but reliable .22 for plinking and small game hunting and came across the semi-automatic Marlin 795. The gun features a black synthetic stock which keeps the weight down to just 4.5lbs, you can carry this thing all day and not get tired. A ten round magazine and iron sites come standard.
I purchased a 550 round box of Federal .22LR from Walmart for just over $8 and have currently fired about 300 rounds of it without a single failure of any kind. The gun is a dream to shoot: light, accurate, reliable, and I find the trigger pull to be very pleasing. Often I hear complaints about .22 triggers and how they seem like they are 10+ lbs, well not on the 795; a light squeeze is all that’s needed.
Now, Marlin has a model called the 7000 that is nearly identical to the 795 except it has a heavier target barrel and comes with no iron sights, but I wasn’t looking for a .22 to mount a scope on or be extremely accurate at a 100 yards. If that’s what you’re looking for then check out the 7000.
As for the 705, the only real problem is that there are no aftermarket companies that make high capacity magazines for any Marlin firearms. It would be nice to have a 25 round mag like a 10-22 but if that’s the biggest complaint that I can come up with then Marlin has done a great job.
I paid $120 total for my NIB 795 from Davidson’s Gallery of Guns (www.galleryofguns.com). So if you’re looking for a quality plinker and fun .22LR to shoot, or even that first gun for your child, I highly recommend the Marlin 795.

i have one too

i have a model 795 and the gun is perfect for everything. i live on 40 acres and my property butts up to a 40 thousand acre club and they have a problem with the coyotes and beavers that gun is perfect for riding on a snowmobile or fourweeler or just walking around ive shot a-lot of rounds with mine and its never jammed, its had a fiew miss fires but thats probably a primer problem with the bullets i've owned my 795 for more than 3 years and i've shot it more than all my guns combined

I have one of these and I'm not as impressed as the two people posting above. It works okay, but it is not great. It has a cheap feel to it, the last shot hold-open feature rarely works, and I've had a couple of failures to fire. I would strongly recommend saving up a bit more money and getting a Marlin 60. I also have a 60 and it is a much better gun. The 60 never jams, it is more accurate, and it feels and looks more solid. I've never had a FTF or a jam on the 60, and the hold-open feature works every time, preventing dry-firing.

However, if you're just looking for something cheap and basic, the 795 is okay. It is about as simple and cheap as it gets, easy to clean (for a semi-auto), fairly accurate, and it works fine, so long as you're counting your shots and not squeezing off an 11th round for a dry-fire. The 2 or 3 FTF's I had aren't a big deal so long as you're not relying on it to save your life. It operates correctly 99 times out of 100, except for the last shot hold open.

Counting break-in and an Appleseed Shoot a few weeks ago, I have right at 700 rounds through my 795 using 5 different magazines. I've experienced no FTF's or jams, and the last shot hold-open has always worked.

I've tried 4 kinds of ammo and shot about 400rds. I've had 2 ftf w/ federal solids but otherwise it has been jam free. My last shot hold open doesn't always work, but if I use cci stingers it works most of the time.

to mukjp2; take out the action, and look at the Lsbho; see if it a slight bit bent, or rubbing on the sidewall. Straighten it out a bit, maybe pull out a bit, and steel wool the side of it a bit. problem should go away. Also , where the bolt face meets the chamberface; the chamber face has a ring indented all the way around it, with a couple of larger indents, for the wire/ejector thingies to fit into; take a toothbrush, or dental pic, and clean out this groove all the way around the chamberface, and the 2 larger indents.
To improve the trigger, stone/smooth the hammer and sear parts a bit, then either take out your trigger return spring, from the trigger/guard assy., and cut off 1 coil, or get a bic pen clicky spring, or an old harddrive door spring, and put in there. Pull weight will be cut in about half.

if you have shot less than 500 rounds, best thing to do , is get a brick of cci or federal hi speed, hi velocity 22 rounds, that are solids, and copper washed. this should smooth up everything real well, to include the feedthroat assy., and entrance to the chamber.

Marlin Model 795 review

Hi all

I have found the Marlin model 795 to be substandard in materials . The gun shoots well and is very light weight and accurate and inexpensive this I like! I also like to keep my guns maintained and I clean them often and this means total disassembly . The part that has suffered in this gun and is made so cheaply is the trigger assembly and guard it is plastic and if you are not very careful you can twist the attaching screws thru the cheap plastic and this is not because I have man handled it either it is from just flat out cheap parts! Now try to find parts for this. :banghead: I have to date, not been able to get this part! I have always just gotten the screws snug, but today the plastic broke out in a circle around the head of the screw.

I say if it were not for this, you would have a great gun for the money! But I would not buy another Marlin until they fix this cheaply made assembly of plastic. I was deeply disappointed in this aspect of the gun, and plan on writing them to tell them so! I would say to those looking to make this purchase save your money and buy a Ruger!

I have a couple of rifles that are similar- A Mossberg Plinkster (model 702), and a Remington Viper, circa 1987 or thereabouts.
My intention is to put an action like those mentioned above, and put it in a custom stock, like what these guys are doing (putting .22 actions in airsoft gun stocks):

I didn't know that anyone else was using Airsoft stocks for this purpose, but hey, they are! My son is into airsoft, and has a LOT of broken actions, but the stocks are all still good, and some are of heavy abs, other plastics, and even steel. So, I'd like to try it with one of these cheap .22 rifles.
Please excuse the long post, and for any repeat info. I just thought I'd throw the rebates, and this idea, out there for fellow members. Thanks for listening, and for any thoughts on a project like this.

I recently picked up a 795 from Dick's for a total of ~$85 after MIR....The rifle is unbelievable, runs any ammo and is accurate as heck, plus its a pleasure to shoot. I put on a set of Tech-Sights and its good to go.

Anyone know how big the hollow area in butt stock is? Pics would be great!
I was thinking it would be a nice inexpensive gun that could be rigged as a survival gun with some gear/ammo in the butt stock.

To answer my own question, on the Marlin 795's being sold right now, the butt pad is molded into the stock and is not removable. So, you can't store anything inside. Older ones did have a removable butt pad and a hollow stock, but I don't have access to an older one. Did read about someone storing extra ammo in the butt stock.
