I am thinking of getting a cheap semi auto 22 just for general plinking purposes and have been looking at a marlin 795. Ruger 10/22 is probably a bit better but is also a bit more expensive and I just want something cheap to take up time with at the range and plink with so the 795 caught my eye since it is just a little over a hundred bucks at wally world.

Anyone handled them and are they half decent or total pieces of garbage?

Marlins are great...I've a Model 60 (semi)and a 25N (bolt)...My Model 60 will outshoot an out-of-the box 10/22 all day long. Not very much you can do to "customize" it like with a 10/22, but as long as it continues to shootlittle bitty groups,Idon't care!

I have it, I love it. It's reliable, shoots great, mags are readily available from Marlin.

An out of the box 795 is more accurate than an out of the box 10/22. 10/22 can be made more accurate, but then the prices become way different.

Two things you need to know. One, a new 795 should be throughly cleaned before shooting. I mean the action, not the barrel. Mine had a lot of manufacturing detritus in it. Two, the front sight screw can shoot loose, so it needs a drop of loctite on the threads. Past that, you won't have to do anything for years.

Only problem I had with my 995 model was a brittle recoil buffer (or maybe it was susceptable to a solvent... it cracked) and a barrel pin that came loose after thousands and thousands of rounds.

It still shoots like a champ.

I had my mind set on a 795SS. Did the online comparisons, thought long and hard, and called around for prices. Went down to the gunshop, asked for the Marlin 795SS, and the guy behind the counter grabbed both stainless Marlin 22's they had back there, the 795SS and the 60SS, which has the grey laminated stock. That old codger blew my carefully-laid plan all to hell when I examined and shouldered both. I ended up with the 60SS, and never looked back.

Great, I may be heading to wally world to get one when I get a money order in I am waiting on and hold off on the XD. little over a hundred compared to four and change is a wee different lol.

795...

i give the Marlin 795 my two thumbs up. i love mine, i also own a ruger 10-22 that i had to trick out to make accurate. that 795 though came out of the box a reliable shooter. i would just try to avoid shooting hyper velocity out of it because of the plastic bolt buffer.

I put a BSA 4 x 32 scope on it with weaver see-thru rings. it shoots either CCI mini-mag HP's or Winchester Dynapoints very well.

good choice! -Eric

whats the plastic bolt buffer and what will happen if i do shoot hyper velocity

explination:

the bolt buffer is a small plastic peice that is in the back of the reciever that the bolt slams into when a round is fired. it acts as a buffer (hence the name) to quiet the slamming of the bolt and to keep it from slamming into metal and causing undue wear.

The buffer may be just fine, but why push it? i think high velocity rounds are good enough for any real use for the .22 LR and that Hyper velocity rounds are not as accurate.

ive been shooting high velocity CCI mini-mags in my 795 for 3 years and have had no problem what so ever. i have checked out the bolt buffer on occassion when dissassembling it for cleaning and see no unusual wear or damage. my bias is that i dont like to use hyper V stuff in a semi-auto. i save that for the bolt actions.
you might want to stay away from most anything made by Remington, especially the Rem. Thunderbolts! good luck! -Eric
