Had recently talked myself out of a HMR due to already having a Marlin 25M 22 mag rifle. But....................I came across a NIB 917V today for under 200 OTD. Guess I had a weak moment.

Now I need some recommendations. What would be a good scope to put on it? Also, do I just need rings or would it be better to add bases and rings?

What are you looking to spend and at what ranges are you planning to shoot it ...time of day?

I'd say Nikon Prostaff or Bushnell Elite 3200, but those are almost as much as you spent for the gun and you may not want to spend that much.

Folks seem to like the Mueller APV scopes for .17 hmr duty, SWFA has them for $115. The Vortex Crossfire and Diamondback series' would also probably work well for you.

Bases are included in the box. Just found them. Now all I need to do is to add rings and a scope.

Midway USA always seem to have their Whitetail classic in 6.5 x 20 x 50 on sale (supposedly marked down over $100). I got one on my Savage 93 and it is a real shooter, no problems with fogging, etc. good clear and good light gatherer. I put the .17 behind pigs ears at over 150 yards all the time. I recommend it for the .17.

Burris Z rings - were PERFECT on my 917V

I put a Nikon ProStaff 3X9 on my rifle and it was unbelievable considering the bargain price.

I have a Sinclair bore guide, a Dewey cleaning rod & jag, AND a set of Burris Z rings left over from that rifle, all in perfect condition, that are just sitting here waiting for a buyer that needs them all...

Simmons is also offering a 25% rebate on stuff right now too. That would make that $100 scope about $75.......

Karl,

If it is all in your way, just send it to me and I will give it a good home.....

In my "high quality" extra scope box, I have...........

Nikon primos 3-9x40with bdc
tasco 2.5-10x42 varmit mildot ao
tasco 6-24x40 varmit ao

Which would be good on top of the HMR?

Well of that group, the nikon would be my pick. Best scope of the group by far.

Ihave had, and shot many diff versions of the marlin. If you are going to target shoot primarily, then get a scope with at least 24x; this will let you see tiny holes, at 100 yds-- an 18x may let you do this, but not sure. I know with the 24x, the holes at 100 are hard to see, but you can.
If you have some very good scope mounts, the double wide, 2 screw base type, and that has one of them that has a allen screw that bites down through the middle of the mount, into the dovetail, then I would do those.
If you can't find what i have described, then get some kwik site, tip off blocks, and put them on first, and then use what mounts you want.
Also, I have found that they really like to be super free floated; so really channel out that stock some, under the bbl. then take and cut off 1/2 to 1 coil from the trigger return spring, to make your trigger lighter.
Lastly, you bbl may still like a prressure pad up front, so get a drawer close pad, or cabinet drawer close pads, from home despot, and put under the bbl, at the tip of the stock. shoot 2 5 shot groups, with at least 1 minute between shots. then move the pad back half an inch, and repeat your 2 groups. do this for an inch to an inch/half. either you will find a sweet spot with some very tight groups, or it will group no better, than with no pad at all.
Also since there are about 12 diff types of hmr ammo out there, make sure you get 1 of each box.
Lastly, I have found many 17 hmrs, that will change favorite ammo, or really tighten down on groups, as far out as about 500 rounds. So don't be afraid to retest after several hundred rounds.
Oh yeah, 1 more thing, clean the bbl out first, then do a breakin on that 17
or you will copper streak it. 1shot, and clean, after each shot, for 5 shots.
then shoot 5 shots, clean, and do this for 5 groups. then do about 50 shots, or when you see the accuracy fall off, but wait no more than 50 shots.
Final clean and lube, then shoot to your hearts desire, and only clean, when the accuracy starts to fall off again.

getting back to the origional question now; if you are not going to primarily target shoot,
anything from a variable 9 to 12 power, or even to 14 x, is plenty.
I primarily target shoot with my 17s, so they all have 24 x's. The Tasco Varmint , I have 3 of
those, and have 1 on a 243, and used to have one on a 308. All have been an excellent scope
for the money.

If you're already looking at Midway, look at the BSA "Sweet 17" I got it and have no complaints what so ever. Also look at Boyds gun stocks I got the Evolution un-finished for dirt cheap. all i had to do was stain it. The barrel doesn't touch anything.

Might have the scope thing figured out for now.....

I don't find anything for the 917 on Boyds website.

I have the 93fv and it was a great rifle! That is, until my wife confiscated from me. Now she loves it.

OOOPS... wrong make... I didn't realize this was Marlin. Thought we were talking about Savage...

Scope issue solved. I put the Nikon on my AR. The Tasco 6-24 went on the 917 and the scope that came off the AR went on my 22 mag that had a scope screw up the other day.

I have not shot it yet, but the trigger does not impress me so far.

What do you guys recommend for a trigger job. Can I do it myself or is it a complete replacement issue?

You can get a pretty good 3# trigger yourself by changing to a lighter return spring, trimming a little off the striker spring, and adding a trigger stop screw. Mine had such a strong spring that it would nearly punch through the rim of the cartridge. Don't remember how much I cut off and they may not need any now. A new one from Brownell's was only five bucks then so I didn't worry too much but I did take it half a coil at a time until the striker wasn't going so deep into the rim. I haven't had any misfires from light primers strikes yet and I've put quite a few rounds through the gun since I did this. There is always a Rifle Basix trigger also. There were problems being reported with them when I was doing my trigger job and I didn't want to chance one.

Mine wears a 6x24x40 scope and is very accurate with the 17 gr. V-Max, not so great with any of the 20 gr. or the .17 gr. HP loads.
