Marlin JM 30-30: should Everyone have one?

No, no it wasn’t. Have to recall, the Swede Mauser came about the year before. If we want to pat ourselves on the back for being the fastest dog with 3 legs just because the 30-30 was the best AMERICAN development, then fine, but in the world of cartridge development, it was obsolete the day it hit the market.
I said first American civilian cartridge. In that context, it was the best.
That was in a time frame of it had to be American or it was junk.
I realize the 8mm lebel was first. And the Mauser cartridges were all better than it.
In that day if you brought a Mauser to the deer camp, you probably would have gotten strung up as a traitor.
I don't like the 30-30. But I understand it's significance in history even if it's because of people's poor choices.

Is a lever gun “the best?” Probably not.

Are they fun? Satisfying? Generally great? Yes.

IMO they can be scoped and do almost anything you want a gun to do at 200 yards and closer, or they can be used with irons out to 150 yards no problem (assuming your eyes are up to it.) At iron sight ranges for ethical hunting, with iron sights, I think a lever action 30-30 is about as good as it gets. But if you want to reach out farther, or use a scope, a bolt action in an uprated caliber has its advantages. But they probably won’t be as fun as the lever.

I have a Marlin 336 “waffle top” made in 1950. It’s been used and shows it, but it is a great firearm. And if it were my only gun, I don’t think I’d be giving up much at all for practical purposes.

The 30-30 was once one of the most popular cartridges in the US and Canada. It’s one of my favorite cartridges.
I have a Marlin 336 with the straight grip stock. It has the JM stamp. I also have a Winchester 94AE Carbine. Both are chambered for 30-30.

Before selling the Marlin, why not shoot it and see if you like it?

Sold it for an extra $50 and am happy.
Just bought a new 870 SPS Super Slugger 12 gauge with the $ and lm not looking back.
I have all the deer guns I'll ever possibly need.

And I still have my 1895 SBL 45-70 G to Seriously scratch my Lever gun itch:evil:
But you guys did he get me thinking...

I received mine on my 12th birthday back in 78....... my dad gave me the choice of it or a Winchester lever action as both were on sale for $79.99...... at Jamesway. I chose the Marlin, easier to mount scopes and I just liked the looks better. It's still with me, I even picked up a lever action 22 Marlin 39A along the way. They are a great American fifle..... well suited for whitetail deer here in PA...... especially with all the brush and woods where I hunt.
