Got the Unit 2 this week. I took advantage of Marvels holiday pricing. 10% off of the units sold with a poly mag, and 10% off of poly mags. I got a Unit 2, original with adjustable sights, and 3 poly mags.

The finish is very nice, the sights are very nice Bo Mar style, could be made by Novak- not certain.

The poly mags are robust, and fit well. No additional sanding was needed.

The frame is a Colt Combat Target, I had never fired it as a .45. This build will be pretty much dedicated. I put the .45 upper into retirement for the moment. The Colt was made 96-97, for one year. It came with adjustable sights as well. I'm thinking it was a pre cursor the the Special Combat Models.

Went to the hay pasture for my target time. Cold and windy, bright and clear, a great day to not be at work and shooting! My target was 8 yards away.

I carried what .22 I had available, wasn't too concerned what it was, as I was looking more for break in time. I had Winchester "333", 36 gr plated HP- 1280 FPS, Federal Auto Match 40 gr solid- 1200 FPS, and Remington Golden bullets 36 gr HP- 1280 FPS.

Marvel states that Federal will not work well. I found this to be the case, granted I did not try much of it. But it basically turned the pistol into a single shot.

The Winchester was about the same. I ended up using the Remington for the rest of the session. I did have a few fail to fires with it, but on the second time through they went off.

I found the sights be good. It's hard for my eyes to see the contrast between black sights and black bull, so I switched to an orange bull. This helped considerably.

The posted target is the last 40 rounds I fired, out of about 140. I figure another 200 or so, and I should be broke in to the point of finding exactly what ammo it will eat best.

Overall, I'm very pleased with it. This will cut my practice/shooting costs considerably, and my shooting- if I find the time to do it more- should improve as well.

Nice field report; very informative. I had an old Essex frame that I had put together as a winter project many years ago. At the time, I fitted a Colt Ace conversion kit to it and had gotten fairly decent results with it. Later I sold the Ace unit when I needed some quick cash, and have been thinking about a quality .22 conversion kit, like the Marvel, once again.
And I found that when I took my daughter shooting last week with her new Beretta Neos, that she also did much better using an orange bull target than she did with the usual black on black set-up. Good advice for young and old shooters alike.

bannockburn,
Thanks.

Being somewhat thrifty (tight), I figured the most economical way to really shoot a lot was to go to a conversion kit.

Very, very cool!

Do you have a link for Marvel?

I've got a ramped .38 super 1911 on the way and Marvel is the only brand of conversion that works with ramps and .38's.
