I have some extended family on Maryland's eastern shore and im considering relocating there. The eastern shore is still pretty rural and from what I understand, more gun friendly than the liberal western shore and baltimore/DC metro area.

I would like some info on Maryland's gun laws. I see that rifles and shotguns are not regulated. But what about handguns? Is there a waiting period, permit to purchase, etc? Can you get a carry permit in MD?

Thanks for the help.

I'm no legal expert, but I'll try to answer some of your questions.

There is a seven day waiting period for handguns and you don't need a permit to purchase. You're chances of getting a CC permit are slim to none. If you were a retired LEO from this area you could get one. If you make large bank deposits frequently you could possibly get one. Or if your life has been threatened (and well documented) possibly. For the rest of us, no chance.

You might want to consider Delaware which is close by. I don't know about their CC laws, but I'd be willing to bet that they're better than MD.

Here in VA we're right next door to Maryland, also known as the California of the east coast. No CC reciprocity with VA. In fact, before I can cross into Maryland, I would have to unload my pistol and keep it separate from the ammunition (i.e. pistol can be unloaded and unconcealed on the passenger seat but the rounds have to be out of reach, like boxed in the back of the car).

There's a 7-day waiting period for pistols and self-loading rifles. We're in the Dark Ages WRT CCW - it's a political candybar. About the only good thing is that Maryland is NFA-friendly.

Personally, I would consider either Virginia's Eastern Shore or Pennsylvania.

Ok thanks guys. I figured the CCW might be a longshot.

and self-loading rifles

Really? So there would be a waiting period on a 10/22? Or is it just on stuff like AK's, AR's, etc...?

Thanks for help guys.

Its it ok to have a "truck gun" in Maryland? I see at that link it says you can legally keep a rifle or shotgun in your vehicle as long as its unloaded. But do LEO's frown upon this? Keep in mind im referring to the rural eastern shore, not Baltimore suburbs or anything.

No. If you're transporting a gun, it's got to be unloaded, cased, and (though this is debated due to slightly vague language in the law) out of easy reach.

Also, if you are caught with a gun in your car and you are not heading directly to or directly back from a range, gunsmith, gunshop, or other "formal or informal shooting event or exhibition" you are in violation of the law. To my knowledge, there hasn't been anyone arrested or charged with this in recent memory, but I wouldn't want to be the test case.

That only applies to handguns ;)

I live in MD and it sucks, gun law wise anyway. I love the eastern shore but have thought of moving back to PA so I can carry again! MD. . . like a bunch of commies.
