I was offered a job in Clearsprings,MD. and I have no idea what your gun laws are like.
I wouldn't be changing my address,as this is only going to last for a few months(maybe up to 6)then I would be moving on to Con. for a few months.
I want to have at least 2 of my guns with me,win 1300 defender and my
Spingfield ultra compact 45acp, to use around the apt. if needed.
My apt. is in a not so good area which dosn't really bother me when I'm awake, but I sleep better with a lump under my pillow...
Are there any laws against handguns in your state?
Do you have safe passage laws for out of state visiters ?
And last but not least how & where do I put them in my car while traveling?
Thanks
Ken

Maryland is pretty anti in general. If you're going to be a new resident, you can bring all of your guns with you no problem. If however you're going to just be a visitor I think you may be SOL. We don't really have any peacable journey laws here that I'm aware of. In fact, if I want to go to the range I have to have my guns unloaded, mags unloaded, seperated from ammo, preferably in the trunk during travel and I can't make any stops along the way. I can guarantee that if you have a CCW permit it doesn't matter here in MD.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I could be wrong on the visiting thing, you may want to check packing.org, or beter yet, call the Maryland State Police and ask them.

I second Deker's suggestion on contacting the MSP. Against all probability, the MSP folks that deal with firearms regulations are pretty good.

My best guess is that you'd be OK bringing along your firearms. Just abide by all of the stupid rules regarding transport.

That bad?
I'm from Mich, and the job situation here sucks...
I guess I'll just deal with the laws y'all have and leave the handgun at home...
Shotty still comes with me, in case, broke down, unloaded,in trunk, under spare tire..... :(
Thanks for the info, even if it is bad news..

If you are going to be in an apartment, you are a resident and should have no problem bringing guns with you. In a transient motel, the story might be different.

For transport, lock the gun in the trunk and remove any indication* of guns from the parts of the car that would be visible to an officer in a traffic stop. You can take a handgun to the range, an informal shooting area, a hunting area, and to/from a store or repair shop. CCW licenses are theoretically available but are issued only to businessmen and a few others including, reportedly, people with political influence.

Clear Spring is a nice little town; it is in the western part of the state, and that area is pretty gun friendly, but of course state law affects the whole state. It is only about 6 miles from the PA line, so you might want to consider living in PA. If you get a PA drivers license, PA is a "walk out with it" state, and a "shall issue" state rather than MD's 7 day waiting period and no CCW.

*An officer seeing a speed loader on the console was deemed "probable cause" for a search for illegal guns in an MD case.

Thanks for the heads up Jim.
I feel better now about taking my handguns with me.
I don't have to worry about gun stickers or things like that on the car.
It's just a old sunbird in stealth mode, lock box in the trunk to hold the gun stuff.
I'm going to check with my cousin (his apt.) about a 6 mile move for the cause...
Thanks Again,
Ken

Bring whatever you want, as long as it's not deemed an "assault pistol"....

The laws here aren't THAT bad compared to a lot of other states. Your handgun and shotgun are just fine. Jim covered the most prudent info.

Keep in touch when you get here - we have group shoots every few months that are always a ton of fun. And you'll get to try out lots of other guns for free!

Don't call the state police to ask questions, most the time they don't know the answer and will just repeat what they heard, and give you a hard time. I used to believe the no loaded mags, ammo and guns seperated stuff but if you read the actual code only Montgomery county has such a law, even the AG rep I emailed couldn't find anything about loaded mags etc... Go to Packing.org and get the links to the code there, read it yourself and go from there.

I agree with rabbit my experience with the State Police is they know very little concerning these sorts of matters

I plan on being there on Sunday night, After I get a pute set up online I'll check with ya'll about group shoots....
Thanks Guys
Ken

ChopperKen, you're moving into my neck of the woods. Live just down the road in Williamsport. Living in western Maryland is not as bad as other parts of the state. Transporting a firearm from your home to the range is easy and I've never heard of anyone being stopped. If the cops wanted to stop all of the hunters with weapons eating breakfast on the first day of deer season, they'd need every one in the state. I routinely shoot at the Izzak Walton renge just east of Clear Spring. If you actually become a state resident, buying a handgun will take the 8 day waiting period and depending, you may have to watch the infamous MSP movie on handgun safety and pay the 10 bucks(one time only).
Anywho, welcome to "The Free State" :neener:
