Looking on GB at one. Was looking for a Lee Enfield and came across these. What are the like and how much? I am only going to add it to the collection and shoot paper with it.

I have a MAS 36 that l really like. It is accurate and you can load 7.5 X 54 ammunition using .308" bullets. The down sides are that it has a very heavy trigger pull, no safety, no provision to adjust windage (without changing out the rear sight aperture) and has a shorter stock than many shooters would prefer. I paid $225 for mine which was in very good condition.

This is a good site for knowledge on many surplus guns, there is a former French soldier (kelt) who one of the many knowledgeable folks there.
There is an armorers kit that would have all those apertures to switch out, the French would adjust that way so that the rifle would be sighted for an individual. The heavy trigger pull in a sense acted like a safety to prevent accidental firing with a nervous trigger finger.
I have a couple MAS 36's and eventually all those changes became the MAS 49/56 semi, which I also own. That is one I recommend to buy, I still need to get the variations in between though, to finish that collection.
FWIW, Graf and Sons sells Prvi ammo, or reload if need be.

I was looking for the 49/56 when I came across the 36. I understand a lot of them were left behind in Viet-nam by the French and picked up by Viet-cong. I have yet to lay hands on one. There is a mint looking one on GB with a buy it now of 495. What kinda price should I expect to pay.

i have one of the few mas factory sporting rifles. the thing was so ugly i just had to have it. 10,75x68mm very rare in the U.S.

You can expect to pay from 300-500 for a 49/56, you want it in the original caliber though of 7.5x54. There are .308 conversions out there that are problematic. Does this rifle come with the accessories kit, 4 mags, bayo, pouches, night sight, French manual, etc. If not, I would try to talk down the price a bit. The original sniper scope and mount sells for around 500 by itself nowadays, the bayo I,ve seen on sites for around 50, mags anywhere from 15-30.
There might be an arsenal rebuild date on the left side of the receiver, thats normal. A capital P in a box with date, like P74 for example, original manufacture date will be on barrel under handguard-----mine was not re-arsenaled, 1962.

Oops!, just looked again and saw the rifle is on GB site, no room for wiggle. No more are coming into the U.S. I paid 500 for mine with the extra's, really enjoy it.

Now about that Sporter MAS36, in one word--------SWEET!! I would enjoy that rifle. Query that rifle configuration on the website I posted, you will get some good knowledge on the history of it and how they came about.
