I have my eye on an arsenal-refinished French 7.5x54mm MAS 36 rifle, the bolt-action predecessor to the semi-auto MAS 49. Not all the parts match, but that appears to be arsenal replacement. It's parkerized and in good shape. Any thoughts on how much I should pay for it?

Thanks!

Parkerized means post-war refurbishment,so around the $200.00 area should be about right.Although they are going for a lot more on Gunbroker,if it matters.I just got a post-war 36 with original black paint finish for $189.00 and danced the happy dance. These are growing scarcer,it seems, since no importers will ever have any more. All MAS 36s in this country are now in private hands.Good shooters and value is rising.:)

Get it!, you wont regret it (although the French ammo has dried up). Very accurate, first shot out of mine was a bull at 100 yards. $200.00 -$250.00 is the norm now.

AIM currently has the Prvi Partizan 7.5x54mm MAS M1929 spec load (139gr FMJ) available at a really decent price for this point in time ($107.95 per 10 boxes of 20 rds each), and this ammo is non-corrosive and boxer primed...

Get some before it goes away forever...

Not

It is not going to go away for awhile. I can buy it at every gun show for around $7.5 a box for 139 grain SP non corrosive. I paid $50 for mine mint condition over 10 years ago.:neener:

stolivar, you're obviously going to shows that I'm not going to...

Where are you getting Prvi Partizan 7.5x54mm MAS ammo for $7.50 a box?

I'm willing to travel a little for enough of it...

:)

bought my last box

at the KC gunshow 2 months ago. a buddy of mine bought some for $11.95 2 weeks ago at the same gun show.

heh ive had one of those rifles for like 6 years and never once shot it since the ammo is apparently unavailable in az, ive looked at gunshows and never once seen it i got one box of this crazy middle eastern type ammo for it but every single one in the box didnt fire. The primers were dented to death but no boom.

well I just looked thru them at gunbroker for the sake.LOL! Why is it dealers alot of times try to inflate prices, don't they look at others selling theirs? One guy has one with most of the finish gone asking more than most who have one in "pristine" condition.I see this alot with mausers for sale also.

I have watched dealers relist and relist for months and never drop their price.

But anyway most are trying, and I stress "trying" to get $255 to $350 and at least some are honest enuff to mention that the bore is counterbored.

In this case I might be interested in one but will wait to find one at a gunshow where I can inspect the bore and overall finish. The right dealer at a show will be reasonable though most will probably inflate their price also.

Makes me clad I picked all mine up when Numrich had them for $36 each...

FWIW, the one I saw at a show last fall was $100, and it had the grenade launcher.

The MAS Mle. 36-51 (with the integral grenade launcher) is rarer than the straight MAS Mle. 36...

But you can often still find them pretty reasonably priced if you look around a bit...

The MAS 36 when converted to .308 by Century was shortened by 1 " and the foreend metal that anchors the forearm to the receiver was cut off.Wobbly and worthless as far as collector value goes.

Some 36's are worth more money, a well worn original pre-war 36 will be worth 2-3x a post-war new refurb. same or more $ for LG48's and 36-51's

Some of the specialized variations have rocketed in value the last 10 yrs. 36-51, LG48, CR's etc...

The rifles left the factory new with counterbored barrels. Counterbore is normal.

I bought a MAS 36 at a gun store about a year ago. It was marked for clearance at $165 because no one was interested in "that funny looking rifle".

It is in extremely good shape. I finally took it to the range just to test fire it a couple of weeks ago with some of the Prvi ammo. It shot 1" at 50 yards. Looking forward to shooting it at longer ranges. I'm happy.
