I FINALLY got around to buying some 7.5x54 French ammo for my MAS that I've had for about 9 years and have never fired. Problem is, it doesn't seem like the ammunition will feed correctly out of the magazine. Ends up with the tip of the round hitting well bellow the chamber and jamming. Feels more like the magazine isn't sized correctly for the round.

I'll take it into the gunsmith but before I do I was wondering if this was some kind of common problem?

Sounds like the magazine is not fully pushed up into locking position. Is the snap lock on the side of the magazine fully engaged in the locked position ?

Yes it's fully locked and the magazine itself is secured tightly into the reciever. Kinda seems more like the lip is catching the round as it's fed out driving the bullet downwards as it leaves the mag. I was thinking that maybe it needs to be bent a bit or filed to allow the round to move smoothly out.

Could be. I wish I had another to compare it to. Certainly if the rifle too was converted it should be stamped or etched onto the gun somewhere... I'd hope.

Anyone have a source for magazines?

:banghead:

You might need to fiddle...

with the mag lips. I had to with mine to cause the cartridge to release from the mag earlier. I have a 308 version and I cannot tell the difference between the mags when held side by side........a very fun rifle to shoot.....the muzzle brake works well....chris3

I also found that changing the position of the screw that holds the trigger group in place will change the way the action operates and might also change the way the magazine feeds. I have not figured out just how to adjust the screw so I can't be any more help yet. The screw has a spring loaded catch so it will stay anywhere you set it.

I have fired a fair number of rounds of the FNM 7.5x54mm MAS 139gr FMJ (milspec) ammo through my MAS Mle. 49/56 with extremely good results. As a matter of fact, I am impressed with how accurately it shoots, especially given the fencepost sized front sight...

And the FNM ammo is made by Prvi Partisan, of course...

For what it's worth...

I have a .308 converted MAS 49/56. The magazine on this rifle is stamped 308 cal on the floor plate. Maybe you have a bent follower or a bent magazine lip?

The measurement should be taken after pulling the trigger and holding it down so that the auto sear is holding back the hammer.May require a friend.

The 308 rifles...

have 308 stamped on the left side of the receiver in big numbers. Mags for this rifle are not "fitted" like some rifles and are meant to be changed out. Have you tried another mag? I still think you have a mag problem, not a rifle problem. For a double check, is your gas port clean? chris3
