Mass shootings being prevented by responsible gun owners

All week I've been hearing and reading on f.b. about no mass shootings ever being prevented by armed citizens. This ofcourse frustrates me, I came across this quick read and figured I would post it.

Also, these cases ofcourse don't include the countless prevention not documented, and these obvious acknowledgement of firearms criminals sometimes face.

Mass shootings that don't occur don't count, don't you know? If a potential mass shooting is stopped, a mass shooting did not occur, therefore a mass shooting wasn't prevented because to be a mass shooting you must have four dead, right?

The anti-gun people don't even want or trust armed officers in school in their gun free fantasy land and more than they want or trust responsible citizens armed in defenseof self or others.

We have had armed deputies in our schools and it seems to work better than a strict "no guns" policy like Connecticut and Oregon.

About a third of our local schools have School Resource Officers or SROs, some since 1997. (Wasn't it Bill Clinton in 2000 proposed the COPS in Schools program?) And they do more than just act as armed guards; they do all sorts of in-school public safety programs.

The Sullivan County Board of Education's aim is to have a school resource officer assigned to all 20 school campuses in the county, not just the four high schools that have had SROs since 1997.

Suspect Gowan entered school with two loaded guns; angry and irate, he threatened the school principal with a gun. The school resource officer, Carolyn Gudger, drew her gun and engaged Cowan in a standoff, allowing the principal to escape. Cowan demanded her to give him her gun and tell him where the fire alarm was. Gudger kept her gun on him. With him following she backed into an empty pod; within two minutes two police entered the school in response and converged on the pod. Sheriff's department has drilled on this; rapid response reduces body count. They ordered Cowan to drop his gun, he pointed his gun at them, when he swung his gun back toward Gudger, they fired and killed him. As routine where I live, the state bureau of investigation did a shooting review and presented results to the grand jury; the shooting was deemed justifiable.

Thank you. I also feel there is something much sicker than a genereal consensus of people who dislike guns. The anti movement seemed to jump on this in typical, disrespectful and war profiteering format. They seem to use these mass shootings as pawns supporting their hateful talk.

Out of the last 148 mass shootings.....

According to the FBI, citizens have engaged in gun fire with the shooter, stopping it, 3.1% of the shooting incidents.

That represents stopping the bad guy 2.5 times MORE often by armed citizens as compared to armed off-duty LEOs.

■■ In 21 incidents (13.1%), the situation ended after unarmed citizens safely and successfully restrained the shooter. In 2 of those incidents, 3 off-duty law enforcement officers were present and assisted. Of note, 11 of the incidents involved unarmed principals, teachers, other school staff and students who confronted shooters to end the threat (9 of those shooters
were students).

■■ In 5 incidents (3.1%), the shooting ended after armed individuals who were not law enforcement personnel exchanged gunfire with the shooters. In these incidents, 3 shooters were killed, 1 was wounded, and 1 committed suicide.

■■ The individuals involved in these shootings included a citizen with a valid firearms permit and armed security guards at a church, an airline counter, a federally managed museum, and a school board meeting.25

■■ In 2 incidents (1.3%), 2 armed, off-duty police officers engaged the shooters, resulting in the death of the shooters. In 1 of those incidents, the off-duty officer assisted a responding officer to end the threat.


From that, the data shows that it is more than 2x more likely that an armed citizen stops a mass shooter than an armed off duty LEO. Yet, off duty and retired LEO's always get the exceptions to the gun control laws.

Prior to this data my standard response to the question when has a legally armed citizens stopped a mass shooting is; when was the last time a legally armed citizen was killed in a mass shooting while armed? I'm only aware of one, the guy who tried to stop the Las Vegas CC's Pizza cop killers and made the fatal assumption there was only one shooter.
