Going to be making an awesome trade with my barber this weekend. I am trading my Spike's M4 style AR for his desert tan (duracoated) Tactical Machining full length match type rifle. He said all I need is a lower parts kit and recommended a match one due to the rest of the rifles configuration. Any suggestions between 100-200 dollars? Thanks

Mike

Cro Magnon, are you very familiar with ARs? Are you sure that you're not getting the short end of the stick on that trade? What do you mean by "full length match type rifle?"

I don't know about the RRA FCG. I've had at least three of them go south on me. One at just over 1000 rounds, another at just over 3000 and the other at something between those.

Considering your budget, I'd look at a Geiselle SSA-E FCG. Now that is bomb proof.

First, after looking at Tactical Machining's website, I don't see anywhere that they sell a full length upper. It's probably a parts kit. Their complete lower's run $250. That's with a trigger, though a basic gi style trigger. Their uppers seem decent, but nothing spectacular. Find out exactly what barrel and handguard comes on his upper and who assembled it. I personally don't think I'd make the trade unless the upper is something decent. Spikes makes good rifles. Find out more details before you trade/buy anything.

As for good $100-$200 triggers, Giessele is great if you want a 2 stage trigger. Jard is good if you want single stage. I've heard good things about the Timney triggers as well. I like a 2 stage trigger on an AR. I went with the adjustable Giessele. Expensive at $280, yes, but it is very nice and with a set of springs can go from a quality match rifle trigger to a top end service rifle trigger. It can be set to a very safe weight for field use and also set very light for bench/match use. Not much more versatility I could ask for from a single unit.

TonyAngel, to answer your question I am very familiar with AR-15's. I have owned and operated all of the major brands of AR's....Bushmaster, Colt, Rock River, Armalite, Spike's, Olympic, for the most part you name it...Including building my own. I am not a fool and would never down trade myself. Tactical Machining was started by a local police officer (I've know for 15 years) in Deland, Florida. I have already owned one of their rifles and have seen their operation first hand. As they do not make full length barrels...it is a parts gun. The upper, lower and bolt carrier group are all T/M. I didn't go into great detail about the rifle because that was not the focus of my question. I wrote it to basically explain that it is going to be set up (by me later) to be a full length match rifle and I wanted to know a good match parts kit/trigger. That's all. The guy I trade with is a retired Gunnery Sgt. from the USMC and was a scout sniper. He really knows his stuff and I have know him for over 12 years. But in response to your suggestion, thank you. I looked it up and definately interests me. Any personal experience with it? I found one on Botach for $200. Looks like a winner...have to get more info on it though.

I have several ArmaLite Tac and NM two stage triggers and I'm very happy with them. They are adjustable with three positions for the disco spring. You can buy the ArmaLite LPK with the Tac two stage for $120. Check out ArmaLites web site and the tech pages for info on the two stage trigger.

Man, I was just trying to make sure that you weren't screwing yourself. That's why I asked. I have no experience with the rifle brand that you are trading for, but do have experience with Spike's and know the Spike's to be good stuff.

As for the Geissele, they are the only triggers that I use now. I have one rifle with an SSA-E in that has over 10K round through it, without a hitch. I don't clean that rifle much either.

What impressed me the most about Geissele SSA triggers is that they attain their pull weight and feel through geometry, not the use of light springs. The are very reliable and worry free. In all honesty, I think that the RRA NM trigger has a better feel, right out of the box; but over the course of time the SSA stands up to use much better. Keep in mind that the SSA is not meant to be a "match" trigger, but a refined field or battle trigger.

Regardless of what you get, if it says Geissele on it, you can rely on it. If you prefer a single stage, I like the Timney. Some like the Jewels better, but I found it to be a bit on the fragile (for lack of a better word) side.

One thing that I would advise against is taking a stock trigger and having a trigger job done on it. I know that some will disagree, but I'm not one of the guys that might put 1K rounds through their rifle in a year. I shoot my rifle a lot and had at least a couple of "modified" triggers go south on me over time.

I definately plan on getting a reliable trigger. My other AR guy does excellent trigger jobs on stock triggers, however I think that this is gonna be my 700-1000 yard shooter so I plan to have it done correctly. I also have an armorer that will be putting it all together for me....he put together my Spike's from scratch and did a hell of a job on her. Almost hard to let her go now...

If you're really going to be reaching out with this rifle, the SSA or SSA-E may not be the best way to go for you. Of course that depends on your trigger control. If you're one of those guys that can shoot well with 4.5lb trigger out to those distances, then the SSA-E may be right up your alley.

The SSA-E is very easy to maintain, has no adjustments and just works. If you want more of a "match" trigger, then you'll need to take a look at the Hi Speed line. I like the DMR trigger.

Yeah I'm one of those guys that shoots well with stock triggers or similar triggers. I have a private 700 yard range I use often and love reaching out and slappin those steel plates with lead and copper. Can't wait to get her togther. Here is a look and what I'm working with. The picture was taken with an older phone of his so it's not that great. I think I will enjoy the desert tan...:D

Bud, I don't know if it's the picture or just me, but that sure looks like a 16" carbine barrel to me and a mix of parts. I believe I see a couple of carbine length free float tubes and a set of rifle length handguards, a carbine length gas tube and rifle length buffer/spring. Is that a barrel nut in the plastic bag?

If that is what you traded a working Spike's carbine for, I don't know. Unless you are getting other parts that aren't in the picture, you're going to need a proper buffer/spring for the stock that you have, buffer tube, upper parts kit, lower parts kit, gas block, and a muzzle device. I don't see a charging handle either.

Honestly, I really don't think that setup that you have, once you get it together, is going to do anything that the Spike's couldn't have done.

Man, I'm not trying to be contrary or abrasive or anything, but I don't think that I would have made that trade. Of course, it could just be the pic.

No there are other parts, and some of the parts pictured are not part of the trade. It is a 20" barrel. He has everything except lower parts kit. I told him to send me a picture of the upper lower and barrel. I haven't traded yet and obviously wouldn't do so until I visually inspect each part/component and make sure it's all there. Like I said, he's a good buddy of mine and I can't wait to see it and get it together. I know that he said he had to make a run to T/M to get some other things by this weekend. Once I get it together, I will definately post pictures.

Good luck on the build. BTW, I ordered my last couple of Geissele triggers from PKfirearms.com They ship pretty quickly and their prices are competitive. They once put a LPK together for me using a Geissele trigger.

For AR stuff/work, I like ADCO Firearms. Great people that know what they do and what they sell.
