A friend stumbled on a high power match rifle recently for a song. Unfortunately, before he bought it, it transferred hands a few other times, so no one we've talked to really has a definite history on it. I won't tell y'all what he paid for it just yet, I was just wondering if I could get a guestimate from you folks.

It's built off a Remington 700 action, serial number B66xxxxx range. Caliber .308 Win. Has a pretty heavy contour stainless barrel with a glare strap, about 24" in length, I believe it's a Hart with a 1:10 twist; the last owner we talked to about it guesses it's had 200-300 rounds through it. It's stuck in a wood stock marked "Freeland," with a pretty wide forearm and a rail with a cuff type match rifle sling attached to it, also a Freeland. Doing the dollar bill test, it's floated all the way to the receiver. The trigger group appears to be stock Remington, with a guestimated 2-3 lbs pull; I don't have a pull guage to verify, but it's pretty dern light. The bolt itself cycles very freely. The receiver is slotted for stripper clip feeding. Sights are marked "Redfield International Match" front and rear. I've never played with sights like this before, I'm not exactly sure what the adjustment increment is in. On the elevation scale, a counterclockwise turn moves the sight up, and is marked MIN and YDS, in 15 minute increments up to 60 minutes. The rear aperture has a rubber eyepiece on it.

I can try and get some pictures up for y'all ifn you want 'em tomorrow afternoon when I get home from work.

Thanks in advance.

Those Redfield International sights have 1/4 minute clicks. Someone put a lot of money into that rifle, and it should be a tack driver. I hope you appreciate it.

good rifle for a entry level rifle into bolt gun across the course highpower.
Back only like 10 years what you have was the best right along with the model 70 for building match rifles but alas times are a changing. with the coming of the space rifle (based on the ar platform), tubb rifles and many others not to many folks are building the old model 700 or model 70 rifles up much any more.

What alot of folks are doing is using those type of actions to build up palma rifles. the caliber is already correct and all you need to do is really to rebarrel it to get the most out of the 155 palma round with a 30" barrel.
But I also bought pretty much the same rifle in the winchester model 70 , same sights and all and plan on using it this winter for practice and then change the barrel out before next spring in order to use it for the palma matches this coming year as next year is the tryouts for the USA palma team next december and in order to get a invite you have to finish in the top 10% in one of the qualifings matches before that next year to shoot in the 2007 palma matches, not sure which country it is held in that year.

The twist is really to fast and the barrel is to short for a effective 800 plus rifle but you should have a great rifle for 168 and 175 grain bullets out to 600 yards.
Did you get any stripper clips or any other goodies with it like more inserts for your front sight or sling or the such.
You can get some killer deals out there right now on rifles like yours and sounds like you did also.
With the hart barrel it sounds like a rifle from the late 80's till mid 90's as the harts were very popular then, The first thing I would do before you shoot it would be check the throat wear and check the bedding as the bedding usually is the first thing to go weather or not it has been used much in the last 5 years or so.
Just saying the above since you do not have the history on it. mine came with the books for round count and the bedding was not good anymore so had it re done.

Load some ammo and go out and have some fun.

I'd like to see it, but judging on what you've said, you could see it anywhere from $900-1300.

FWIW, the Redfields were good in their day but aren't the top anymore. It would be a good starter match gun, and the shights SHOULD be the only upgrade needed later.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Jim - Thanks for the dope on the sights. I'm barely understanding A2 AR sights now, let alone these things. Heh. I think right now it's set for a 200 yard zero. I believe my friend said the previous owner said something like 6 clicks up for 300 yards, and 11 or 12 to 600. Sound right?

More info:

Jon - Yeah, my buddy got a bunch of stripper clips and a few different inserts for the front sight. I don't have the stuff to check the throat condition. I've shined a pen light down into the chamber and didn't see anything out the ordinary. Ran one patch down the barrel and it came out clean enough to use as a tablecloth for a Sunday dinner.

Steve - My friend is the one that actually owns the rifle...I've been trying to drag him along to a local 300 yard reduced match so I won't be the lone new guy there. He's been thinking about trading it off for an AR or selling it, but who knows. Oh yeah, some (rather poor) pictures:
