I walked into one of the local gun stores today and first thing I see is a brushed stainless (bead blasted finish?) mateba unica 6 in 44 magnum. No box or papers. Just the gun. Shop is asking 1295, but said they would take 1200 cash + tax.

the gun itself looks to be used but not abused. the black compensator has finish wear and I noticed a scratch on the left side of the barrel. Not deep, but enough to mar the finish maybe a half inch to an inch long. Little dirty, but otherwise appeared solid.

Any ideas on how fair a price it is? Is it an original finish? anyway to fix the scratch?

Screw it, I bought it.

6 inch barrel + compensator
its stainless so I can use a scothbright pad to remove the scratches

paid 1284 after taxes and end up getting a free soft case for it.

Well since you asked.

I sold off all my toys awhile back. i decided I would get back in and reload this time. I am even signed up for a reloading class later this month. I had an 1800 budget for guns, 800 for the reloading equip and components, and then 400 for a safe. I will end up adjusting things a bit so I can afford another revolver in 357. Nothing this outrageous, but something nice. I will also not be shooting this one for awhile. I want to run some reloads through the cheaper gun before I attempt doing anything with this.

I think you did pretty well. If I recall correctly, the last few Unicas I saw were going closer to 2K if not above.

If you're looking to add a .357 to the collection, I think the Mateba's new cousin would be a fitting choice.

I am tempted, but I have heard mixed reports about them. I will probably look at getting another 586/686 or Dan Wesson.

The Mateba is way cooler than the rhino, such an awesome looking gun. Hopefully it shoots as good as it looks, espically for $1200

Looks like a glass bead blasted finish on that stainless, you might try a Scotchbrite red or green pad, and some gun oil to refinish. I did this on the bead blasted stainless barrel of my Cooper M52 Jackson hunter than acquired a blemish. Just drip some gun oil on the stainless steel, and firmly daub the Scotchbrite pad down on the surface you want to matte back out. Practice on some other surface until you get the hang of it before you attempt it on the gun. I am very pleased with the results I got, as the area that was blemished can barely be detected now.

Alternately you could use the Scotchbrite to brush out the entire finish, I have a Freedom Arms M83 Premier Grade, and the finish is brushed... hence why I have a Scotchbrite pad or two around in case I need it.

just going to know
I hate you

wow, I would have dickered him down cause it doesn't have all stuff, but really cool gun

He knew I wanted it and he was not concerned about selling it. What is interesting is that he was going to take it to the indy gun show this weekend, but believed it would sell at the kentucky next week. He revealed that after I bought it. In the end I figure the gun is missing a few things, but the fact is it is 900 less then the last one to sell on GB. I would much rather have it without the box and a desert eagle then have a box.

You lucky dog. Anyone know if some revolver maker will buy the rights/blueprints to make more Mateba (or Mateba-ish) revolvers (likely new name and with improvements) again?

The Chiappas Rhino does look nice. Like Deckard's backup gun he kept forgetting. :)
Any Rhino reviews?

I believe the original had two barrels (and I think some would switch between .357mag, and .44

But hey, you got the auto revolver, so....

BTW, do you watch 'ghost with out a shell'

To yenningcomity, be careful if you decide to take the gun apart for cleaning. It's essentially a Rube Goldberg Device that fires bullets. There's also a ridiculously tiny screw on the "roof" of the trigger guard that you will need to remove to take the gun apart. You'll probably have to go to a jewelry shop or the like to get a screwdriver capable of removing it, and if you do remove that screw, DO NOT LOSE IT! It will render the gun non-functioning, and Mateba is no longer in business, so the odds of sourcing spare parts is about nil.

It sounds like, since this gun wasn't in the case, that it didn't come with the secondary recoil spring. In order to shoot .38 Special loads with reliability, you'll need the lighter spring, however, even with that, it probably won't be 100%. In my experience, the Mateba likes .357 loads, though they don't have to be hot.

You can't switch calibers, but one of the cool things about the design is that barrels can be quickly and easily swapped with a special wrench that comes with the gun. I think some models were sold with multiple barrels, but most were not. If you look at the end of the barrel (make sure the gun is unloaded, safe, and no ammunition is present in the room) you should see two holes. Those holes are meant for the barrel removal wrench. If possible, I would suggest going to a machine shop and seeing if they can fabricate one for you, as there's a chance that the barrel will become loose if you shoot the gun a lot.

You're thinking of Ghost In The Shell, the cyberpunk anime film directed by Mamoru Oshii. It's fairly well worth watching, as it's a pretty solid example of just how excellent Japanese animation can actually be. The sequel, Ghost In The Shell II is easily one of the most visually astonishing science fiction films I've ever seen. Easily on par with Blade Runner.

The music in both films, however, is utter crap.

The character that carries the Mateba is Togusa. He uses a 2600m in the movies and a Unica 6 in SAC. Honestly speaking though I never noticed what he carried until after I decided I wanted it. After going back to re-watch SAC it is obvious there was a gun fan on the team.

WoW, yeah, and I wasn't even drunk, just tired (point to fact, GIS:SAC comes on at 3AM)
^^ Yeah, me too...

The episode I remember was when Togusa killed a suspect and the attorney made a big issue that he used such a overkill .357, when the rest of the squad has service autos.

BTW, if I remember correctly, he likes the extra penetration.

Awesome find, even if it's missing a barrel it's worth it.

+1 for "Ghost in the Shell", I don't watch too many anime but that one is superbly done.

With a whole meatsack-full of shoddy joints you can see how sealing my brain in a titanium casing and an artificial body can appeal :D

Well some bad news. If you check the pictures there is a nut on one side and a hardware screw on the other side just above the cylinder release. From the parts diagram and viausally checking it holds part of the trigger mechanism in place. My best guess the c-clip holding it in fell out at some point and the po replaced it. they did a bit of filing to a washer to make sure it would work with the cylinder release.

The good news is I am in contact with the guy that runs matebafan. As long as he can get me pics/measurements I can have the piece made and make the revolver 100%. He believes it is brushed nickle and not stainless which is also a plus I suppose. He did say he has never seen a picture of one like mine which is cool. In any case I hope to get this set straight. I did buy 50 rounds of 44 mag at the gunshow today to test it. If it has any other problems I may be having a talk with the gunshop I bought it from.

Well, here's the thing. You've got to buy 'em when you find 'em, because when will you find another one. Great purchase...!

The worst thing about the new Rhino revolving pistols is they don't make them in 44 Magnum.

Congrats on your purchase, and reloading straight walled revolver cartridges is very easy, don't be intimidated.

Appleseed is another beautiful anime with some interesting takes on futuristic combat and society.

Congratulations on the gun, I've always wanted a Mateba! Get it good to go and let us know how it shoots!
