So, I traded into my first Ruger DA wheelgun last weekend. I went to the pawnshop with my father-in-law/shooting partner with a Savage rifle I was looking to trade. I was hoping to trade the rifle and some cash into a handgun of some flavor, whatever looked interesting.

They offered me a good trade, and the only pistol in the cases that really caught my eye was a 6 inch stainless Ruger Security Six. The gun was badly scratched, had terrible grips, was hideously dirty, and some jackass had filed down the front and rear sights.

I traded into the gun for a 215.00 rifle + 50.00 cash. Now I'm 265.00 into the revolver, but the timing and lock-up are tight.

We took the gun to the range, and I shot a box of my express-load .357s. The trigger was better than my either of my .357 S&Ws, and I shot better with the Ruger than with my 4" model 66 S&W!

The first thing I did was to completely strip the gun. I methodically cleaned and re-oiled all of the guts, then worked over the finish with 400, 800, and 1200 grit aluminum oxide paper, removing any scratches and GENTLY evening out the finish. I ended with 0000 steel wool and lastly Mother's polish to bring back a soft satiny shine. This was my first attempt at refinishing stainless, and I'm well pleased with the results.

I ordered a set of Sile grips from CDNN (9.99 + 5.99 shipping). I got the grips yesterday. They required some serious fitting and re-contouring, but I enjoy working on guns. I got them fitted and re-shaped, and am two coats of tung oil into the finishing process. Now I'm 281.00 into my project.

I ordered the front blade and rear sight assembly from Ruger (GREAT customer service). They have to assemble the rear assembly, and it should be here by early/middle of next week. Total cost for new sights was 21.00 + 3.00 shipping.

That's going to make my Ruger cost me a total of 305.00 and a couple of pleasant afternoons.

I'm fast becoming a Ruger fan.

before and after pics please!!??
BTW I LOVE my 4in Security Six, and also traded a (.22) rifle for it straight across.

I concur...completely. I'll probably get fragged here for this, but I think my Ss is better built than even my GP100.

Sniper X

I don't know about better built (perhaps true), but for me, the Security Six would always be my first choice over the GP-100. Handles better, balances better, and is definitely a revolver Ruger should consider making again.

I remember reading that even Rugers owner said it was more expensive to build than the GP100 and they didn't make a penny off selling the SS but did from the GP100...I may be confused, but I feel that may mean it was a more intricate action with better materials used. May be wrong, and am a GP100 owner so love both and also know the GP will shoot anything that can be loaded into a .357mag case.....

The Ruger Security-Sixes were marketed by Ruger as guns that were designed from a clean sheet of paper -- and they were that. Bill Ruger decided against a side plate and he was the first to use investment casting.

S&W had a lot going for their guns. First, they used investment casting against Ruger, arguing that it was weaker! And they took advantage of the longstanding policy of gun magazines never to badmouth a paying advertiser. It really wasn't until after the advent of the 586/686 that magazines even mentioned the problem of K-frame Smiths with hot magnum rounds.

One of the things I like about the Security-Six over the GP-100s is that if you strip the guns and look at them, the "sixes" have grips, while the GPs have stumps. The steel is all dumped up front where it throws weight into the barrel. This is great for target shooting at a range, but not so great for quickly picking up targets in the field. The 4-inchers are still manageable, but the 6-inchers are crazy! Everyone wanted to be part of the Python crowd.

If you carry your 6-inch Security-Six (say while hiking or camping), you'll find that it's nigh "the" perfect field gun.

The one thing I might do is put on Millett front and rear sights. They're much nicer than the factory sights.

Congrats. Security Six's are sweet guns. Mine is a 4". I picked up the target grips at a gun show for twenty bucks.

You are lucky. I got a 4 inch blue police trade in for 265. Carried a lot ,shot little. Like you a good cleaning, new grips and it is great gun.

Congrats!

The Ruger Sixes are fine revolvers, I have three. As stated previously, before and after pics please.

Even though the small grips are horrible, they're beautiful. One magazine back in the 80s said that Bill Ruger only had one tree and he was still making grips from it!

How about a photo?

Congrats on your new Security Six. Too me they are the best keep secret in revolvers. I along with others I feel the Security Series was the best SA/DA revolver Bill Ruger ever produced. I have owned two and still have one. I will never let my Police Service Six go. I did find a 6 inch Security Six 200 birthday addition for $400. It is in very good condition. I am picking another revolver this weekend and probably will buy the Security Six.

Anyway, you will enjoy your Security Six and then pass it on to your kids. They are a durable strong revolver.

Take care,

Went back to the Hogue Monogrip.

Well, I've handled the Sile grips I modified for a couple of days, and they just don't fit my hand the way the Hogue monogrip did, so I put the mono back on the Ruger.

I didn't take any before photos, but here is the after cleaning/buffing product. It looks naked without the sights, but I should have those early/mid next week.

I looked for the Millett sights, but the Millett website doesn't list them, and Brownell's shows all of the Millett sights as "out of stock." Anyone know what's going on?

You need a Tyler T-Grip for that new addition.

 The T-grip is neat, but would look much more at home on my Smith snubby. I like the feel of the Hogue, but it's ugly as homemade sin. I'll save up my pennies and splurge on one of their custom exotic grips. I'm partial to the checkered tulipwood with the gripcap, if anybody's looking for Christmas gift ideas for me... :D

I passed up a chance to get a new Ruger Security Six many years ago when I first started out. I have kicked myself many times about it. Comparable in size to the S&W K-frames but built as strong as the L-frame if not stronger.

Congratulations on the find, She's a looker. They are also great shooters and are just about the perfect frame size. After getting a 6" GP100 and a 2.25" DAO SP101, I went looking for and found a nice vintage 1977 4" SS Security Six I quickly snapped up. I also changed the grips out and cleaned it up and now its become one of my favorite revolvers. I have a pretty good mix of semi autos and revolvers in my collection, and this little baby has become my every night nightstand gun. Here's a couple of pics and one with its relatives.

I have to jump in, though I mostly lurk. I bought a heavy barrel Sec Six when they were new. I've put hundreds, if not thousands of rounds through it. I have to join the chorus here and say that it's my favorite. It's tight as the day I bought it. I changed the grips to the Hogue Monogrip simply because they fit my hand better. I have to admit though, some of the grips I've seen in this thread are making me think again about some nice wood grips. Suggestions as to makers?

Thanks, Jim

Nice photos. Sorry to hear that the Milletts are not available. I'd go to the website, get their phone number and call them. The stock sights are okay, but here are photos of a Security-Six with Millett sights.

This is a "shorty" with stock sights. I'm just adding it because it's a beauty!
