So, I traded into my first Ruger DA wheelgun last weekend. I went to the pawnshop with my father-in-law/shooting partner with a Savage rifle I was looking to trade. I was hoping to trade the rifle and some cash into a handgun of some flavor, whatever looked interesting.
They offered me a good trade, and the only pistol in the cases that really caught my eye was a 6 inch stainless Ruger Security Six. The gun was badly scratched, had terrible grips, was hideously dirty, and some jackass had filed down the front and rear sights.
I traded into the gun for a 215.00 rifle + 50.00 cash. Now I'm 265.00 into the revolver, but the timing and lock-up are tight.
We took the gun to the range, and I shot a box of my express-load .357s. The trigger was better than my either of my .357 S&Ws, and I shot better with the Ruger than with my 4" model 66 S&W!
The first thing I did was to completely strip the gun. I methodically cleaned and re-oiled all of the guts, then worked over the finish with 400, 800, and 1200 grit aluminum oxide paper, removing any scratches and GENTLY evening out the finish. I ended with 0000 steel wool and lastly Mother's polish to bring back a soft satiny shine. This was my first attempt at refinishing stainless, and I'm well pleased with the results.
I ordered a set of Sile grips from CDNN (9.99 + 5.99 shipping). I got the grips yesterday. They required some serious fitting and re-contouring, but I enjoy working on guns. I got them fitted and re-shaped, and am two coats of tung oil into the finishing process. Now I'm 281.00 into my project.
I ordered the front blade and rear sight assembly from Ruger (GREAT customer service). They have to assemble the rear assembly, and it should be here by early/middle of next week. Total cost for new sights was 21.00 + 3.00 shipping.
That's going to make my Ruger cost me a total of 305.00 and a couple of pleasant afternoons.
I'm fast becoming a Ruger fan.
