What readily available, affordable Mauser actions are suitable for a .308 build? The Yugo's? Most of the Brazilian actions have been ridden pretty hard and I don't want to chop up a milsurp.

Thanks...Funnel

Look for the Yugoslavia M24/47, these rifles were built on FN made actions refurbished after the war, and are much smoother working than the M48. The M48s were made as stopgap issue rifles until they could get more modern rifles, and it shows in the machining of the receivers, with rather rough bolt ways.

FN-Herstal made only 10% of the SHS/Yugoslavian M1924 rifles. The majority were made at the Artillery (later Military) Technical Institute in Kragujevac, Serbia. That same factory is now Crvena Zastava.

If you don't want to chop up a milsurp, Zastava still makes a sporting-pattern M98 rifle called the M70. This same action was used on the later Interarms Mk-X rifles and the Remington 798. Charles Daly stopped importing them but I think someone else has picked up the license.

Just watch for small ring vs. large ring. Generally speaking, small ring mauser is not considered strong enough for 308, but many small ring mausers were built into 308 rifles, and fired many many 308 rounds. Personally, I won't shoot commercial 308 in small ring.

Thanks - I'm fairly familiar with them (large ring, small ring, etc.). I actually prefer the small ring action. I've got an 1895 Chilean contract Mauser and a Swedish M-38 that may well be my favorite bolt guns (in that order).

I'm just missing details like the differences in overall action or magazine length that might matter (although all should accommodate the .308), barrel thread pitch, stock compatibility, bolt differences, etc.
