So I recently bought a turkish mauser K.kale at a gun auction and am confused about its ammo. The paper I recieved with it at the auction says it is a 7.92x58mm ammunition type, after doing some research, the only ammo i can find info on is 7.92x57mm. Then I read on that the new versions are either 7mm or 8mm im guessing is the same as 7x57 or 8x57. I went to gander mountain and they had used mausers there that looked similar to mine but were from germany not turkey that all used 7x57 ammo. which also didnt make sense to me because I thought all german ones were generally 7.92x57 which is converted into 8x57 not 7x57. can anyone help clear up all of my confusion? i went ahead and bought the 7x57 cause thats all they had and it seems like it fits but i want to be sure before i fire it. thanks guys!

It should say on the barrel. the importers typically mark the caliber with the import stam. Look near the muzzle......

NO MATTER WHAT......dont shoot it if you are not 100% sure.

In my experience most turks are 8mm mauser 7.92. But with any mil-surp. rifle it may have been modified..... If you dont know, take it to a gunsmith.

well you seem to know enough already good job. keep in mind a few different calibers might be the same one just labeled different such as how its 9 mm, 9mm luger,9 x 19, and 9mm parabellum. but do your research google is your friend

Let me toss in another similiar question. Buying a Mauser with an 8mm barrel but the receiver has the notch cut in the top center. Supposedly that means it has been converted to an '06. Is that correct??? If the barrel #s do not match the receiver then I should have it checked by an armorer just to be sure-- whachatink ??

"I am looking forward to bringing my god, Spot, to the dog show."

And promoters fretted for days thinking some deity was going to be in attendance instead of figuring out it was a typo and Spot is a dog, not a god.

The standard Turk Mauser is in 7.92x57 and I am sure it was a simple typo making it 7.92x58 on the receipt. The fact that there is no such thing as a 7.92x58 might be the first clue.

By the way, before you ask, yes, 8x57 and 8mm Mauser are actually the same cartridge as the 7.92x57 with different names.

Turkish K.Kale Mausers were chambered in 8mm Mauser which is also 7.92x57 which is 8x57. You can actually shoot 7x57 in an 8x57 chamber, but it would not be too accurate for obvious reasons.
Anyone owning or planning to own a Mauser should do some research to educate themselves about the rifle.

Here's a link to the Turkish Mauser history if anyone's interested.

You never know with Mausers. The problem is that actions, which typically carry the serial number, are often used in all kinds of different guns.

Mine is an 1895 Chilean which was originally chambered for 7mm. But it was sporterized some time in the '50's (not sure...my dad gave it to me and he is gone now) and chambered for 30-06. A testament to the strength of those actions, really, that they could power those kind of heavy rounds. I think that despite the smaller caliber, the '06 actually kicks more than the 7.92 in my brother's K98.

06, does the Mauser have ANKARA stamped on the receiver? If it does it is possibly a Turkish converted 1903 Mauser or a converted 1893. It should also have the importer's info electro-penciled on the barrel or receiver. They were originally in 7.65x53 caliber and both models were converted to 8mm in the 30's and the receiver was notched for clearance of the longer 8mm.
They were not converted to 30'06.
