Mauser Bent Bolt modification

I've been wondering, would it work if you were to tap a M48/48A and use see thru mounts? Not that I would, I prefer scout mounts on all my rifles, just something I was thinking about the other day.

I'm sure 'see-thru' mounts would work just fine. A number of people use them. There comes a time though, when iron sights, regardless of how accurate they may or may not be, become little more than decorations that seem to catch on everything they come near. My wife shoots her iron-sighted Mauser quite well while I can no longer focus on the target and the front sight with these old eyes. Once the eyes go there is nowhere else to go than to a scope. Once you do that, the iron sights are just junk that gets in the way.
If, as some have suggested, you plan to clean out the safe and sell off the 'sporterized' Mausers you might have, it might be well to keep them in their original configuration. On the other hand, I have no intention of selling mine. My kids may decide to do so after I'm gone but that will be their decisions. I consider my rifles to be investments alright, just not financial investments. I've tried to teach my kids that guns are an investment in freedom. Time will tell if I have been a good teacher.

To put Cosmoline's mind somewhat to rest, I do not intend to bastardize an intact M48 for this escapade. I am (I hope) buying an inexpensive barreled action and will mate it with an inexpensive sporter stock. But I still can't bring myself to do the bolt with some kind of Rube Goldberg looking arrangement. If I could pick up a second bolt that would headspace properly with no work, that would be an option. However, I have no source for same. So, I am leaning more toward one of those "scout" mounts that goes on where the mauser ladder sight is supposed to mount. That will mean no iron sights, however, but I can live with that. Like "oldfart," my aging eyes aren't what they were "back in the day" anyway. (Heck, I'm probably an older pharte than "oldfart")

I don't even know if the action is going to come with iron sights on it.

Here's my scout set up, easily converted back to original, on my all matching M48A. capable of 1.5" groups when I'm doing my part.

I like that a lot. What did you use for a scope mount, and what's the scope?
(If I may be so bold as to ask.)

The mount is a B-Square. Alot of people bad mouth these mounts, but I've used several on Mausers and Mosins and never had any problems. It does take me about 2 hours to get one set up just right. Just got a laser bore sighter that should cut the time down abit. The one on this rifle has been in place for 2 years now and hasn't shifted.
The scope is a NcStar 4X pistol scope. Once again the favorite of people who like to bad mouth things. I own 5 of them. The one on the Mauser is the only one I ever had a problem with. The illumination controls fell off while it was doing duty on a 30-30AI Contender barrel. I didn't like the lighted crosshairs anyway. I have a 2X that I've been trying to tear up now for 4 years. It's last home was on my 444 Contender barrel and that thing just eats scopes. The barrel's gone, the scope sits in a drawer waiting for it's next round of torture.
I should admit however that I recently bought a Simmons 4X scope and put it on the Mauser. FOV is a bit better and the optics are just a hair clearer.

Well, now that you're calm I can mention this.:neener:

Supposedly a TC contender duo mount will fit perfectly in place of the rear sight, but you have to remove the sight band and tapp. No going back, easily anyway.

I've been wanting something that is a little more user friendly and am considering having the barrel on this one shortened to 16 inches or so. Anybody know where I can get a folding stock for a Swedish Mauser? A picatinny rail seems like a must too. That will allow me to switch between an ACOG or Red Dot, depending on the mood.
