I'm sure 'see-thru' mounts would work just fine. A number of people use them. There comes a time though, when iron sights, regardless of how accurate they may or may not be, become little more than decorations that seem to catch on everything they come near. My wife shoots her iron-sighted Mauser quite well while I can no longer focus on the target and the front sight with these old eyes. Once the eyes go there is nowhere else to go than to a scope. Once you do that, the iron sights are just junk that gets in the way.
If, as some have suggested, you plan to clean out the safe and sell off the 'sporterized' Mausers you might have, it might be well to keep them in their original configuration. On the other hand, I have no intention of selling mine. My kids may decide to do so after I'm gone but that will be their decisions. I consider my rifles to be investments alright, just not financial investments. I've tried to teach my kids that guns are an investment in freedom. Time will tell if I have been a good teacher.
