Hi,

I bought a Yugo m48 recently and I can't get it to feed correctly.

It seems the the two rounds on the left hand side of the stack pop up before they fully engage the bolt making it next to impossable to close. I have tried different magazine followers, different magazine springs, a different bolt, ammo, just about everything I can think of and still the same problem.
Has anybody run into this before? Is there a way to fix it?

Thanks in advance.

Marbo40k, I do not know, the first thing I would check is the position of the cartridge, the cartridge must be all the way to the rear to benefit from the control fed system, we have to start somewhere, I would remove the action then install the trigger guard with out the wood, do not forget the spacer in the stock for the rear receiver screw. Once the barrel receiver is together try again, if the feed system improves, consider the problem could be caused by the stock.

The rear receiver screw can block the cocking piece if it is screwed in too far without the stock.

Set the safety at the 12 o'clock position.

I had similar problems but it was caused by the follower not being installed correctly (no idea how it happened but I bought it that way), once I fixed that I haven't had any issues, that's weird. If you've tried all that maybe you could take the stock off and play around with it.

Ok,
pulled it out of the stock, made sure the rear screw was spaced correctly, and still the same.
Also made sure the rounds were all the way back.

Thanks for the input.

Try going out on a limb on putting in a 1903a3 follower. Iv played around with one long enough to know it fits (in mine) but have never tried using it. It is larger and it might provide a better feed, but that's a long shot. My only experience here is I used a Mauser floorplate in the 1903a3 long enough to find it didn't work well, it had the same problem, fail to engage the round.

I tried an 03a3 follower and it was too long for the magazine. I cut one down a little bit but didn't seem to make a difference. It's probably impossable to tell without looking at it but is the left feed rail out of whack? How could I tell if that is the problem?

That's about all it could be if the magazine box isn't squeezed in at the top preventing the rounds from riding up under the feed rails properly.

Lay a straight-edge on the sides of the magazine box, and also the sides of the receiver rails and check for straightness.

Any evidence anyone has been using a Dremel on the feed rails?

You could also lay a level on the bottom of the rails with the receiver upside down in a vice.

Check for level at front & rear to see if the receiver / rails are twisted or sprung.

BTW: I doubt seriously if it is a follower issue.
If the correct Mauser follower doen't work, nothing would be gained by switching to something not even designed for it.

Just checked and every thing looks good and straight. Unfortunatly there does appear to be some sanding/dremeling under the left rail, not on the rail its self though. Is the reciver pretty much toast then?

Unfortunately, probably yes.

The feed rail shape on a Mauser action is what controls the rounds in the magazine until they come out at the right time and the extractor hook takes over.

Once they are tampered with, it would take some very skilled welding and re-machining to built them up and shape them right again.

Then you may have a heat-treatment issue from welding that close to the front receiver ring.

you might try some JB weld.never done it myself as never had that problem.
borrow another mauser and look at the rails.you might be able to solder a piece on that would work.
