I have a Mauser k98k or 98k, its a german/nazi rifle in 8x57. It has been sporterized, (all nazi marking still on the metal). The stock was shortened, it has a rear adjustable peep sight and new front sights, and the stock has been changed a bit. I don't like shooting 8x57 because I cannot find it that much and when I do it is really expensive...thankfully not nearly as expensive as 7x57 mauser :D

Can I get this weapon chambered for another caliber?

How does this work?

Thanks!

1. Leave "well enough" alone:

Milsurp ammo is available pretty cheap, but often corrosive.

Well, you can get hunting ammo with little or no problem for $2X dollars a box.

You can reload for the 8x57.

2. Rechamber?

325 WSM may work, but another expensive ammo.

8mm Remington Mag, that is probably worse cost wise.

8mm06.

3. Rebarrel

Now you can pretty much pick your poison.

4. Out of the box thinking.

You could get a barrel/chamber liner and shoot 223?

Nope!
Too much pressure for a liner set-up.
And the bolt face & extractor are not gonna fit .223.

Liners are only used in .22 rim-fire & the older black-powder & pistol calibers.

I wasn't aware that there was surplus 8x57. Thanks for that tip, I have only found $40 federal 8x57.

How is 8x57 ballistically?

Comparable to 7.62x54r?

THanks!

8x57 196 gr ball and similarly loaded hunting ammo is, for all practical purposes, as flat shooting and potent as any military shoulder fired round, 30-06, 7.62x54R, 7x57, 6.5x55, 308, 303, . . . . .
