I have a 98 mauser and I want to re barrel it. I was gonna go 243 but I'm starting to think 7-08.
1) where can I find top of reciever scope mounts for the action?
2)If I have the rear milled flat, how do I match the base height for a scope mount?
3) Probally should be posted in reloading but I'm already here, so, can I resize the 243 brass that I already have to 7-08 without to much hassle?

Thanks in advance

there are quite a few different companies who sell mounts for the mauser 98.
they go anywhere from a cheap set of weaver two piece bases and rings for about $25.00 to custom squarebridges cut for talley ring at around $400.
a lot of the mounts are made for fn style commercial receivers and will need the rear bridge recontoured to work & due to variences between the different maker you may have to do a little bit of shimming the get both mounts in the same plane. brownells & midway sell shim packs.

My rifle has the stripper clip cut in the reciever and just on the edge of the reciever there is a lip that raises mayber 1/8". I have pics in another post of it. I haven't seen any foactory top mounts that will fit it. So I figure ill have to mill it flat, or take it somewhere and have it done, but I like doing my own work.

here are a few that will fit without removing the stripper clip hump. they all average a little over $20

leupold 2pc. bases

Warne Maxima 2-Piece Steel Weaver-Style

Weaver 2-Piece Grand Slam

Leupold 1-Piece Standard Scope Base

Redfield 1-Piece Standard Scope Base

Weaver 1-Piece Grand Slam Standard Scope Base

My 98 Mauser uses a Leupold one piece mount that required no modification to the receiver. It's a pretty simple install for any gunsmith.

Short Cartridges in Long Magazines

I think there are some issues with military Mausers rebarreled to cartridges shorter than the 7.92x57. I have a M24 Yugo rebbled to 308 that sometimes drives the cartridge down and dubs on the bottom of the feed ramp. 308/7.62 Garands use a spacer to allow rounds to feed properly - is there a corresponding approach for 98s? Can you stuff/glue a piece of plastic/wood of the proper size in the front of the mag? And who knows of a good smith who will rebbl a 98 for a decent price, since we're on the subject? I have a VZ-24 that shoots some reloads into 1" at 100 yds off sandbags, and I cannot justify rebarreling that one, for sure. I think we get enamored of a round & forget that what we have isn't so bad, after all. Not that I don't think rebbling is fine - I have, too - just not always the only answer...

I was planning on keeping mine in 8mm. Its a k98. But it shoots about 20" high at 100-200yrds. So I'm gonna do the swap myself. Just finished doing my 7 mag rebarrel and I enjoyed it. Ill buy the stuff and rent a reamer again. Lot of satisfaction in seeing the gun come out so nice. I'm gonna pull my barrel off and take some material off the face and bunp the shoulder forward about .005 since we cut about .002 to much headspace into it. But first time I expected more problems so its not too bad. It still will shoot 3/4 groups, but I want it right

Bed it and buy a taller from sight.

I have bedded a number of surplus 98's. You can bet that the bedding on a 70 year old military surplus rifle is gone and your action is bent and sliding around in the stock.

TN Gun parts has tall front sights.

Just install it and fit it down to zero your rifle.

I have a military Colombian Army model 1898 carbine in 30-06 with a 17 1/2" barrel, made by FN in the late fifties.
I'm going to get it rebarreled and the gunsmith said he would rather go to
7mm Mauser as he says the longer cartridge will feed better that the chubby 7-08, my first choice.

mbonner,I have a .308 win. built on a Colombian carbine action(originally in 30.06). It feeds the shorter round very well without modification. You can get a magazine filler block if you wish but it isn't always necessary. Having said that,I agree that the 7x57mm is a garanteed fit. Either round will serve you well.

My K-98k was rebarreled to 6mm Remington.

I had this problem - where the cartridge would nose-dive and smash into the front of the mag.

I had a smith install a metal block. They didn't really chamfer the edge and occasionally the same problem would reveal itself; I put a small file into the chamber and gently chamfered the edge. The problem no longer rears its head.

You want me to post a photo?
