I have a Yugo M48A Mauser and love to shoot it. Unfortunantly the thing gets fairly brutal after about 40 rounds or so with that steel butt plate. Does anyone know of an aftermarket butt stock recoil pad that will help?

either buy a slip on or get a past recoil shield that you wear on your shoulder... I shoot mine either standing or sitting (no bench) so it's never a problem.... hunched over a bench with the thing crammed into your shoulder is asking for a bruising!

I use a Winchester-branded slip-on recoil shield at the range. It looks kinda like the Past recoil shield, only with the Win logo on it.

What about those Tie on recoil pads?

Has anyone tried the Hogue overmold stocks?

my mauser project rifle sports a the sole of a flip-flop, cut and sanded, bedded onto the rifle. looks fantastic. cuts the bite down quite a bit from that steel plate - and helped me remove some more weight (mine's a sporter, so it is pretty light, and getting lighter). the route i went is nowhere near as effective as a limb saver or decelerator, but it is far lighter, and much better than the steel plate.

I've got one of those lace on leather recoil pads on mine. Works wonders, last time out I was torture testing my scout mount and ran 210 rds thru it. Shoulder had a bit of a bruise afterwards, but wasn't sore.

Cheap:
Slip-on rubber Pachmyr recoil pad (come in S, M, & L)
Ugly as sin & "grabby" WRT catching your clothing.
I also think that they can effect practical accuracy, since they can slip & slide around.

Not as Cheap:
Leather lace-on pads.
They don't seem to be as sloppy a fit, but still not as solid as a permaent recoil pad.

Gettin' to be Real Money:
PAST recoil pads work pretty well, are not as thick, and seem to effect consistency less than the slip-on & lace-on pads. I bought mine used (& promptly washed it.

What rounds are you shooting? Turk milsurp will get your attention, as will the 196gr S&B. Romanian is not as spunky. Remington 170gr is mild in recoil, velocity, and energy.

I put on one of the cheap brown rubber slide on ones you get from Wal-Mart. Don't know the brand, nor do I care. Ugly as sin but does it's purpose and for that is the only reason it is there. Think it's size medium, but don't quote me on that. Really helps the black and blues, I can fire over 100 rounds and I don't flinch anymore like I used too lol

I'll try one of the lace up leather ones. I'm using Yugo Milsurp ammo. Stout stuff.

toughen up ald!!! if millions of krauts could shoot hundreds of rounds daily in sub-zero temps surely you can suffer through a hundred or so!

:neener:

edit - btw, i took my k98 out the other day, that turkish stuff is so hot at 100 yards my shots were 6 inches left and about 4 inches high. i had a handful of romanian rounds, and those hit right at POA. both of them grouped pretty good though. just took a while to figure out where my shots were going. i think i need a bigger target. :D

-sub-zero temps-

Spiff, exactly. It's May in Texas, ain't exactly sub zero stuff around here and no big heavy wool coats.

Not that the thing is bad standing, but on a bench rest...it get's stout. Kinda like 1 beer ain't bad, but 10 can do some damage. ;)

Get any of those el-cheapo rubber slip-on pads, but make sure you get the large size! They work great. I like this one the best:

The large one fits perfectly on my M48 and M24/47.

Also can't hurt to get one of the wearable ones, but I find they are a pain in the ass to keep in place (one size fits none).

You just need to build up a callous like us old timers did shootin' mastodons down by fossil creek. Tell ya what, I'll supply a box of bonded solids for Eleanor (the .416 Rigby), you put 20 rounds through the old hog shooter from the bench, and I'll bet that M48 will start looking downright cushy

Alternatively, the PAST pad works pretty well. Works for my 7mm RUM anyway. Plus I like the fact that it attaches to you rather than the gun - historical accuracy, as it were.
