I'm looking at a Mauser Model 96 straight pull bolt action in 30-06. I've always been intrigued by the straight pull concept and own 2 K-31 Schmid-Rubins, a M-95 Steyr, M-10 Ross and a Browning t-bolt.

Does anybody own one of these Mauser straight pulls and can give me a shooting impression? From what little I can find the triggers are a little stiff at about 6lbs, and essentially sealed in a metal case and unadjustable. Accuracy is reported to be quite good in spite of the trigger. They were sold only for a couple of years about 10 years ago and so are relatively scarce.

I guess I looking for someone to talk me into buying one if the price is right!

Thanks!

I own one in a 6.5x55. They are kind of a unique action design. The action design is very very similar to the Blaser R93 rifle. Not sure what went on between Mauser and Blaser there. But its apparent something was going on between them.

While no tack driver they seem to shoot well for a lighter weight rifle considering the trigger. They were only imported in the US around the Fall of 1996 and available part way thru 1997. They just kind of came and went. Around the same time Mauser was going thru financial turmoil. So not many people know about them. I bought mine in the Fall of 1996 for $450

But as noted the trigger is kind of heavy. Mine checked out at 5 pounds with my trigger pull gage. And yes they are not friendly to adjusting.

Had one in .308. Very interesting rifles, but they just didn't sell well here in the US or in Europe, as well as Mauser having business problems. It really is a sporting rifle, not a heavy duty SHTF weapon. Decently accurate for a light weight. Spare parts for them are starting to be a little hard to find. If buying just to collect and price is right, go for it. If you want a straight pull for SHTF, get a Blaser R93 tactical or convert one of your K-31 Schmid-Rubins to 7.62 NATO.

How do you like your Browning T-bolt?

Thanks for the feed back ont he Mauser. I guess what I like about it is that it is different and that appeals to me.

I bought my Brwoning t-bolt about a year ago. Its one of the the original versions built in, I think, 1969 in Belgium. Its a T-2 model with checkered stock and a aperture sight. One thing to look for on these older versions is the notorious salt wood stock. I'm not sure what years have that problem but I checked it out before I bought it.

I had been wanting a t-bolt for a while and was seriously considering a new version when this one came into the local gun shop. Came in at 8 AM and I bought it at 10 AM! Purchased it and a 1896 Krag Carbine the same day, they sure cleaned me out! I don't regret either purchase a single minute.

This t-bolt is really a nice, interesting gun. Everyone that shoots it falls in love with it. One of my three sons spoke first so it will be his some day. I'm still experimenting with ammo brand that works best, and I installed scope to help with that project.

Personnally I like the older version better than the new t-bolt, feels more hefty and solid. I do like the lozenge shape bolt knob on the new version though!

I looked at the blazers when they first came out,.and a sports outdoor show. back then, they were brand new, they wanted almost a Grand,i thought that was a tad to much for a unknown,so i passed on it.I did how ever watch a hunting show, where some guy was using one,i think they were in Africa.I havent seen any for sale anywhere.
