Can the 8 Shot Security do it all; i.e. slug for deer, shot for geese and ducks and suitable shot for HD with barrel changes?

looks like it but remember in most states for your fowl you can only load 2 in the mag and 1 in the chamber(however im not real educated on my hunting laws in canada) so its not really suitable for anything other than defense from what i can see...personally id get the field and a short barrel for it or get a pistol for defense and a shotgun for hunting whatever works for you.

It could, although I think the 6 shot Mossberg #54169 18.5" & 28" combo would be cheaper and would swing better.

In ALL states, for game falling under the Federal Migratory laws this is true. IMO, I would get a 28 or longer barrel for hunting, especially the birds, as swing dynamics on short barrel shotguns are terrible

True regarding the bird hunting, but you can always plug the gun. Almost everyone carrying a 5 shot gun is doing that. Plugging a long mag is no different than plugging a short one.

Go to the hardware store and just buy a wooden dowel - I like the thicker ones but make sure it's a little slimmer than a shell hull. If your mag holds 7, then measure out 5 3" shells worth of dowel and cut it (adjust this as needed - basically always measure out max capacity - 2 worth of shells). Open the tube, throw in the dowel, and screw the cap back on. The magazine should only accept 2 shells - if it accepts more or less than you got your length wrong. Make sure to test with both 2 3/4" and 3" shells as your gun should accept no more than 2 in the mag of either.

That gun won't be IDEAL for hunting but you could certainly make do with it.

I can plug the magazine tube easily enough. Can one purchase the linger barrel from Maverick and put in on the Security model when I hunt birds? Or is a barrel change not possible?

Mossberg barrels will fit on the Maverick. I see Mossberg 500 barrels and Maverick barrels in Gunbroker frequently.
You would be better off buying the sporting version with the 28" barrel to begin with. It has a plug that can be removed in a minute or two when you won't be hunting. The sporting version holds 5 2 3/4" shells in the mag plus the one in the barrel. It is unlikely that you will need 8 rounds and a short barrel to defend the house. It is more likely the shotgun will be used for hunting. I found the Maverick hunting model with the 28" barrel to point and shoot surprisingly well.

Yes, you can. My Maverick 88 started out as a general purpose woods-n-water gun, 28" mod choke barrel. it is now my HomeLand Security shotgun, 18-1/2" cylinder-bore barrel.

be sure to 'plug' the magazine when used as a hunting shotgun. The Game-N-Fish guys take a very dim view of un=plugged shotguns.
