Shooting this weekend, a friend gave me his brass which included some Maxxtech. After tumbling it, I was sorting by headstamp when I saw a strange ledge in only some of the Maxxtech brass. At first, I thought something like .25 brass got caught inside but it was actually a ledge.

I ground a piece of the brass to confirm what I was seeing, and you can see the cross section at the top of the photo. The piece of brass on the lower right is the same headstamp but does not have the ledge and several pieces of brass I got did not have the ledge. The other four pieces of brass in the pitcure show the ledge. I didn't notice whether they all came from the same box or whether they were from different boxes, maybe with different bullets.

The ledge will be great for seating the bullet, but the case volume is drastically reduced. I'm chucking all with this headstamp, but thought I'd pass the word.

I deal in a lot of brass, and recently got a batch of brass with about 500 of these. I pitched them all in the recycle bin.

It's a ledge to keep the bullet from being seated too deeply or being seated deeper from hitting the feed ramp. With the right bullet they could be used. Those are so thick below the bullet I would drop the max by 15% at least. I'd start very low and work up. Watch for squibs of course, but I would start lower than the min listed.

Did some measurements and a few calculations, and I estimate that the brass with the ledge has about 30% less case volume, assuming bullets seated to the depth of the ledge in both style cases. May be off by a couple of % but it's still large enough that they are all going in the recycle bin.
