McGuinty to Sress U.S. Gun Control

CALGARY -- Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty says he will press the U.S. ambassador to close the northern flow of illegal American guns.

McGuinty and the other premiers and territorial leaders are scheduled to meet with Ambassador David Wilkins tomorrow to discuss issues of mutual concern.

The explosion of violence on Toronto's streets has put guns on top of McGuinty's agenda.

"I have no expectation whatsoever, because I'm not naive, that we're going to somehow influence gun laws south of the border," McGuinty said yesterday.

"But what I do believe that we can do is bring a concerted effort to the border so that we can capture many more guns than we have been capturing in the past that are coming in illegally."

The premier said both sides could do a better job of sharing police intelligence and he will ask Wilkins to lobby Washington to take this issue seriously and to participate in joint initiatives to stem the flow.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair has told McGuinty easily half the guns on the city streets come from the U.S.

Perhaps they should focus on the criminal, not the tool, eh.

Hey, David Wilkins is a former SC state legislator, so any support he offers will be an about-face for him!. :D

Sounds like Canada's problem, to me! "I'm gonna pass a law, and it's up to YOU to enforce it for me . . ." If it can't be enforced, maybe it should be repealed (someone refer the man to the Volkstead Amendment).
