AP News: Maryland refugee resettled in Pennsylvania gives an orphaned Colt Cobra a new home.

“It was unwanted. The owner’s heirs didn’t want it in their homes,” the new owner recounts. Maryland, known as an anti-gun state, often rates among the strictest of the 50 for restrictive gun laws. “The carry laws are almost non-existent in Maryland. I’ll bet it wasn’t able to go out in public with its family at all. The guns here all get to go out with me and my family and enjoy not being locked up at home all the time. It feels go to give it a good home when it won’t be persecuted and shunned,” Ken said. “When I fled Maryland 7 years ago and made it across the border, I brought everything I could fit in the moving van with me. We were all so happy to be in a place we knew we’d finally be free and accepted.”

Ken says since moving to his new home, he’s been able to liberate several guns from unfriendly states. He has an interest in finding and placing neglected, unused, or unwanted guns into his family. “I do what I am able. In this case, it was part of an estate, and his family didn’t want the collection. I wish I could have rescued more, but I could only afford to get this one.”

AP reporter I. Have NoClue asks, “So, running this shelter, would you say you’re a philanthropist?”

“Umm . . . yeah, I guess, whatever that means.”

“It means you do things for the good of others,” reporter NoClue explains.

Ken said, “Right. I do it for them.” When asked if he has plans for a larger rescue attempt, he said he would like to, because he isn’t subject to placing only one gun a month anymore. “We’ll have to wait until we can afford to adopt another. My wife understands these guns need homes, but she doesn’t share my level of passion. Hey, I told her that I was a philanderer like you said, and she got mad and told me instead of buying guns I need to take out the garbage and fertilize the lawn. I don’t think you know your vocabulary very well.”

Anyway, thought I’d tell a cute little news story to introduce my newest addition to the safe. It’s a 1974 era Cobra I found here this week from a member selling on behalf of an estate in MD. I’d been looking for one in good mechanical shape for maybe a year. All the ones I’d come across were either too nice or expensive to make a shooter and carry piece, or were beat to crap and not worth the asking price. This one’s just right. I’ll take it out to the range tomorrow afternoon and see how it shoots. By then, I’ll try to have some pictures of it, too.

What a shame Colt abandoned this market. This and the Detective Specials are the perfect size, right around the same size as a J frame, but uses my K frame Safariland speedloaders. In fact, they fit in all my J frame leather just fine, but too loosely in my K frame holster. I’m very pleased to finally own one.

I like the Detective's Special I found. Wish it had a S&W trigger (and a more reasonable price) though. I can see why many are so enthusiastic.
Nice find.

I enjoyed the story and I look forward to the day when I can flee and rescue orphans. :)
