I have never hunted deer before and want to do that this season.
I can't afford a lease and all the draws for rifle hunters are over.
A friend suggested I check into a "meat hunt."
But what exactly is a "meat hunt?"

Could mean a few things. Many hunting outfitters charge less for a cull buck (often 7 points or less) because they dont want it breeding and passing on its genetics. Or he could mean just a doe hunt where the landowner wants the doe herd thinned out. The idea is its ideal to have closer to 1:1 doe to buck ratio, but in most places its more like 15:1 or whatever, and so landowners who manage their deer herd may offer discounted or free hunts to thin the doe herd. Or you could hunt on public land if thats available in your state. Or he could mean something else. If you do hunt doe though, be careful and dont shoot a button buck (a baby deer with barely any horns popping out, as they look similar to doe). Shoot big mature does if you can.

Meat hunting is the ONLY hunting I do.....unless its Fur....~~LOL!!~~

We call it "Shopping" :D

"Lord Grizzly", the mountain Man Hugh Glass said "Meat is Meat", and thats an explanation in itself.
Best of all, it's good for ya!!!!
Git yer Meathunt on!!!!

This sort of thing varies widely by state. If you're in Texas, you can expect to spend about $300 or more to shoot a couple of does. (And remember, does here in Texas, even mature ones, will be under a hundred pounds live weight.)

That being said, I got started in deer hunting by going on a meat hunt for does. Was a lot of fun, and a great introduction to the sport.
