I've just sold my older Mini-14 Ranch I kept around as a HD rifle package. So, I need to get another small carbine package. I've narrowed it down to these two packages:

1. A Glock 20 (10mm) receiver and the Mech Tech CCU for it.

2. The Kel-Tec SU-16, in the latest iteration--the C model.

Yes, I know they shoot different cartridges, etc., etc. It is not intended to be the ultimate SHTF rifle, just an alternate to a pistol in an extended defensive situation. Compactness is the issue as much as firepower, and I envision usage would be limited to 50 yards or less, or 100 yards at the most. Both would be equipped with aftermarket sights--probably a laser, too. The collapsible stock for both is a real plus.

It looks to me like the Mech Tech and Glock package would be a better quality package, insofar as mfg. quality goes. I have looked at a Kel-Tec SU 16A, and I've read forum info on the SU-16C. The Kel-Tec is obviously of inferior construction, but it does offer a good compact package--and it should work just fine for my needs, too. I already shoot 10mm and .223, so ammo availability and cost is not an issue. Other than sighting in and testing the gun, it would probably just sit in the closet corner.

I've done the requisite searches here, and still have no firm opinion about which way to go. The cost is nearly identical--Glock will sell me a new receiver for the blown-up 20 I have for $150.00+; that makes the Glock / Mech Tech package about the same price as a NIB SU-16C here.

So, has anyone shot and handled both? What's your opinion?

If there's any other salient factors here, point them out.

Not sure about the Glock, but I had a MechTec 1911 package. I was just in love with the concept but the ergonomics were just gruesome. See if you can handle an assembled Mec-tech before you commit. With the short trigger on a 1911 frame, and the position of the frame compared to a "normal" pistol-gripped rifle, the positioning was just HORRIBLE (for me). It might work for you, but y'oughta try one out, if you can.

Hmmm.......

I suggest going with a shorty pistol caliber rifle.
You will probably go deaf if you fire the Kel-Tec indoors, so I don't think that's a good idea.

i was considering the same thing until i saw the beretta cx4.
one of those is def in my future.
im not impressed with the keltec quality and i dont want a pistol with a stock.
i handled the cx4 in .45 at a local shop and it felt real nice.
im just saving for one in .40 right now.

The G20 conversion will be more fun to play around with.

The keltec is also fun and all, but 10mm just sounds cooler than a .223...
