Mechanically correct way to engage safety notch on Remington 1858

My method is exactly how to avoid cylinder turn rings. The method described as lowering the hammer from 1/2 cock is how you get turn rings.

I'm more armorer than gunsmith and cannot articulate the how and the why of the internals getting buggered up. All I know is that when people have treated my guns like that, and ones bought that were treated like that, they were knocked out of time and had turn lines on the cylinders.

Pulling the hammer back just enough to drop the bolt so the cylinder can be turned for the hammer to engage a slot or pin does not put turn lines on the cylinder. Neither does cocking and firing the gun from that position. Maybe we're talking about the same thing but just explaining it in a way alien to one another? :alien:
