Not a bad sized Yodel-Dog for where we live.





My Daughter and I were Deer hunting this morning when this male Coyote popped out into an opening to our left.

It was still early in the morning….so I asked her if she would please “take him out”, that we would still have plenty of time for a deer to come in.

We have a lot of Coyotes around here, but most are much smaller than this one.

Feral Hogs and Coyotes are two things that have a knack for showing up exactly when you don’t want them to. I have had Deer spooked away countless times by both, so we try to keep their numbers whittled down.

Didn't they find that they were breeding with wolves? Hybrids back East? Seem to remember a documentary about a fatal attack where the animal was a hybrid. The animals acted different too, weren't afraid of people at all.

On the other hand, I've seen 'em that big, maybe bigger, but I was in the middle of the Mojave and they didn't look that healthy, just big and lanky. They lived on MRE trash at Ft. Irwin and had no predators at all, save the unlucky one that gets stuck downrange from time to time (and even then you aren't supposed to shoot one).

Nice 'yote! The PA Game Commission has done DNA testing on coyotes and have finally determined that our coyotes are also part Red Wolf. Our male coyotes can get up to 70 pounds.

Here in maine they are mixed with wolfs. They get huge. Good kill for your daughter flint. Congrats.

Had the "chance" yes, actually had a scale in my truck, but it just didn't occur to me. Good size Yodel Dog...to be sure.

I saw one about that size several years ago. We were quail hunting and went to an old honey hole. It was a dense strip of brush/fallen timber along a power line right-of-way that ran along the edge of a corn/milo field. That place had always been good for a few birds out of a at least two or three coveys having up to twenty birds each. There would also be the occasional rabbit.

We walked the edges of it on opening weekend and didn't see a single bird or rabbit. At the end of it the yote about that size ran out and across a small clearing and into a shelter belt. That sucker had eaten well all summer and fall.

The wife and I were out on our place last weekend putting out some cams. As we were driving through one pasture I saw what looked to be a nice sized deer walking the fenceline a hundred yards or so from us. Just about the time I stopped the truck and picked up my bino's to get a better look it hopped a limb and I saw it was no deer but in fact a big ol yote like that one. Before I could get my rifle up and get out of the truck it slipped through the fence and up into the woods on my neighbors property.

Sure wished it had stopped for a few seconds to look back at us, it would have been there to join yours...

Sometimes they are so aggravating. I set up and did some calling one clear calm morning and had two of them come out. One sat on it's haunches just out in the sunlight just out from the wood line in the furthermost corner of our back pasture. He just sat and sat, sitting there sun tanning I guess. The other came out about 350yds from me then simply sprawled out on the ground like he had come to take a nap. They both would tweak their ears around when I hit the soft call but they seemed as if they couldn't be less interested.

Had another couple of young ones that I saw right at the earliest light, and got ahead of them coming down our back hill. I managed to get a shot at both with my bow but not having time and being able to range them I missed horribly. They both ran off playing leap frog of sorts laughing all the way.
